The 1938 model 38-12 was considered one of the best of Philco’s compact table models that year and featured a little bit of everything; a stunning walnut cabinet, striped inlays, attractive gold dial, great Art Deco appeal, and excellent performance. The dark Walnut cabinet is simply gorgeous. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. The striped inlays, which run across the top of the cabinet as well as the bottom, really catch your eye. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Jet black trim adds just the right contrast and finishes the cabinet off perfectly. Even the original labels are still intact inside of the cabinet. This beauty is sure to be the main topic of conversation no matter which room of the home or office you choose to display it in. Philcos classic chocolate brown and gold dial is a real attention getter. It illuminates with a new dial lamp and shows very little signs of wear. All numbers and letters are legible and display nicely. The dial glass is clear and free from any chips, breaks, or cracks. The shiny brass escutcheon adds an elegant touch. Both knobs are perfect and work as they should; on/off & volume, and tuning. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a. Gold color with an Art Deco geometric design. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 11 1/4W x 8 1/4H x 6 1/4D.
