1938 Philco 38-93b Cathedral-Style Tube Radio. Interesting piece, as it’s labeled 38-93 but looks like a 37-93b (different cabinet shape). Based on the inspection date, I’m guessing this radio was manufactured at the tail end of the 1937 production run and was simply labeled as a’38 model. Could use some restoration but seems to be fully functional. Receives fine without an antenna connected. Frequency display is quite badly damaged. Would likely be dust in the wind if not for some ancient tape on the inside holding it together. The tiny bulb that illuminates the frequency display went out during testing but came back on. May be in need of replacement soon. Volume knob was exceptionally scratchy so the pot has been cleaned. It is no longer scratchy. Has numerous chips in the finish: scuffs, scratches etc. But it could be worse!

This item is a. 1939 Philco Model 39-7. It was originally introduced right at the tail end of the Great Depression as a reliable, budget-friendly home tabletop unit. The genuine wood cabinet boasts a rich grain pattern with only minor edge wear and light scuffs consistent with age. There is no heavy water damage or warping. Front Panel: The clear plastic lens covering the clock and radio dials is remarkably crisp, clean, and free of cracks or heavy fogging. The gold-trimmed border remains fully intact. Hardware: All four original front knobs with brass-toned caps are present. Grill Cloth: The original fabric is tight and free of rips or holes, showing only a very light, natural age-related patina. Rear & Bottom: The original perforated back cover is completely intact, along with its external FM antenna lead connection. The case has deep scratching/scuffing throughout the item. There is discoloration/wear throughout. The finish on the case has worn/faded off throughout. You can see the haziness throughout the case (as shown in the photos). I’m uncertain if someone tried redoing the finish before or not. The chassis and parts have rust/corrosion throughout. The dial is very hard to read. The middle dial light doesn’t work. The metal cylinder piece has white stuff coming out off it. The case is separating throughout. According to Ramirez, Philco model 42-PT-3 (wooden cabinet with photofinish front) is one of the very few new models introduced by Philco in early 1942 after U.
