Nothing beats the quality, craftsmanship, and performance of a Zenith radio and this one is no exception; An absolutely stunning 1938 Zenith model 5-R-316 Long Distance table radio featuring a beautiful American Walnut cabinet, ribbon cut inlays, attractive gold dial, automatic pushbutton tuning, and tremendous performance. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set with elegant ribbon cut inlays which flow across the center front and sides. The large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Pinstripe inlays along the bottom of the set and jet black trim finish the cabinet off perfectly. This beauty is sure to be the main topic of conversation no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. This is Zeniths less common known gold dial. And what an attractive dial it is! It is illuminated by a new dial lamp and features a gold background with black numbers and letters. A half moon design is pictured next to each station frequency which is done in a very unique font. The Zenith logo along with the sleek gold Z pointer is positioned directly in the center. Everything on the dial is legible and shows little signs of wear. The surrounding bakelite escutcheon adds an elegant touch and houses all the functional ivory pushbuttons for automatic pushbutton tuning. Both Z knobs are in great shape and control on/off & volume and tuning. Although the automatic pushbuttons are functional, they will need to be set to your local stations. And it is recommended that you use the manual tuning knob due to the age and delicacy of the auto mechanism. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a whiskey. Gold color with an Art Deco geometric design. The station call letter tabs are also fine reproductions with a brown background and white lettering done on heavy card stock for original look and durability. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 13 1/2W x 8 1/4H x 6D.
