To view our other auctions including additional restored antique radios, grill cloth, and supplies. Here we have one of the last Zenith table radios to be produced while the United States was entering WWII and Zenith was changing over its lines to wartime production. The 1942 model 6-D-628 table radio featuring an absolutely stunning dark walnut cabinet, metal black dial, great Art Deco appeal, loop antenna and excellent performance. The dark walnut cabinet is a real stunner. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. It’s rounded sides and wide curved base reminds you of why Zenith was top of the class when it came to quality and craftsmanship. An intricate cut grill not only adds great Art Deco appeal but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Dark walnut tones and the arching Zenith logo finish this little table top off perfectly. Everybody will stop to admire this beauty no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. It is illuminated by a new dial lamp and features a black background with gold station frequencies and large airplane style pointer. All numbers and letters are legible and show very little signs of wear. Both’Z’ knobs are in perfect shape and control on/off & volume and tuning. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classic gold color with a diamond and black dot design. All tubes in the 6 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. Using just the loop antenna the radio performs very well. I will also include a copper line antenna for additional reception strength if needed. The Cabinets Finish and Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. Dimensions: 12 1/4 W x 7 1/2 H x 6 D.
