To view our other auctions including additional restored antique radios, grill cloth, and supplies. Here we have a rare 1939 Zenith model 6-D-425 table radio. This beauty features a gorgeous American Walnut cabinet, unique tortoise shell pattern escutcheon surrounding an attractive back lit ivory dial, enclosed wood back, loop antenna, Bakelite chassis and terrific performance. The American Walnut cabinet is absolutely gorgeous. One of Zeniths most unique designs. It is well built and fully enclosed except the bottom which holds the upside down Bakelite chassis. Wonderful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. A waterfall top, intricate cut grill and notched sides make for a real Art Deco look. Jet black trim adds the perfect contrast. This rare beauty is sure to be the main conversation piece no matter which room in the home or office you chose to display it in. Backlit dial is a real eye catcher. It features an ivory background with black numbers. It lights with a warm orange glow and displays all station frequencies legibly without any signs of wear. The unique tortoise shell pattern escutcheon is in perfect shape and houses all the controls; Top thumbwheel dial for on/off & volume, large ivory Z knob in the center for tuning and a high / low tone switch at the bottom. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring an antique gold color with an Art Deco geometric design. The chassis in this Zenith is actually made of Bakelite. The only model I have ever seen this on. All 6 tubes were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. Using just the loop antenna the radio performs very well. The Cabinets Finish and Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. Dimensions: 11 W x 7 1/2 H x 6 D.
