The early commercial development of radio was pioneered by the Westinghouse Corporation. The founder, George Westinghouse, was adept at acquiring patents and developing products based upon those patents. He acquired from the inventor Nicola Tesla the patents for the alternating current (AC) electrical motor/generator and from Edwin Armstrong the patents for the circuitry of the early radios. Westinghouse also established the first commercial radio broadcasting station, KDKA, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1920. KDKA is now the oldest surviving licensed commercial radio station in the United States. Westinghouse was one of the founding owners of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1919, and in 1926 RCA went onto establish the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), a group of 24 radio stations that made up the first radio network in the United States. Westinghouse went on to become a prolific radio station owner and a big player in television – they later branched into many different areas including consumer electronics, lighting, and home appliances!
