Offered here is an Allied Radio Corporation’s Knight Deluxe 40 watt integrated tube amplifier. This amp was built in the early 60′s by my late uncle who was an EEngineer at Northern Electric. The amplifier is in “Showroom condition”. It was always housed in a cabinet. No scrapes, scars, dents or scratches anywhere to be found. A collectors piece you can be proud of. Sporting 5 inputs: Aux, Tuner, Tape, phono, & phono magnetic. Complete with owners manual, schematic & full size circuit pictorials. This amplifier employs a pair of 6973 output tubes/channel for a conservative 20 watts/channel. NOTE: The 6973 pentode is no longer being manufactured and nos examples are becoming difficult to find, [matched pairs in particular]. Those privy to the sound of the 6973 will surely attest to their magic. My uncle collected vintage tube amplfiers and this one was his favourite amplifier to drive a pair Tannoy corner horns. The amplifier is operational but one of the 6973 output tubes in the right channel tested weak [40% emission] & will require another tube, “preferably a matched pair” to meet factory spec. Please read the technicians report card below. All tubes, resistors, & capacitors in the circuit were tested. The Selenium bridge rectifier was replaced with a new diode. 5 uf cap [c-42] in the tone control section replaced with a mylar film cap. 1uf cap [C-20] in the left channel replaced with a mylar film cap. Resistors: All tested within factory spec. The amplifier employs 11 tubes. 2-12ax7′s in the preamp section. 2- 6cm8 [tone controls]. 2-12ax7 phase inverters-driver tubes. 4- 6973 output tubes, one push/pull pair per channel. All tube tested for emission on a calibrated B&K for emmision [life test]. [1] original stock GZ34/5ar4 full wave rectifier. [2] Both original 12ax7′s in the preamp section 90%. [3] one of the 12ax7′s [phase inverter] in the driver stage tested weak [65%]. Replaced both 12ax7′s in the driver stage with a matched pair of new production Tungsol 12ax7′s. [4] one original 6cm8 in the tone control circuit tested weak [60%]. Replaced with a strong testing old stock GE 6cm8 [98%]. [5] three of the four 6973 output tubes tested better than 85%, the fourth one failed [40%]. Note: I haven’t been able to locate a matched pair of 6973′s. The amplifier is operational but. One of the 6973 output tubes is bad & needs to be replaced, a matched pair will be required to bias to spec. The stock tubes alone are worth the price of admission.
