Atwater Kent was based in Philadelphia, PA and produced high end radios for well off customers. During the depression many radio manufactures resorted to producing lower cost radios to accommodate the tough financial times. Refusing to compromise on quality Atwater Kent did not follow suit. They continued production of high quality and expensive sets which eventually led to their demise, closing down their plant in 1936. This is Atwater Kent’s highly sought after model 145 tombstone radio from 1935. One look at this beauty and you are reminded of their top notch quality and craftsmanship. The dark walnut cabinet is simply stunning. Gorgeous wood grain flows throughout the entire set. A step up top and solid fluted columns on the top and sides make for a unique look. Four marquerty inlays grace the front of the cabinet adding to the elegance and style. A large bell designed grill reminds you of the Art Deco era. Jet black trim adds the perfect contrast finishing this beauty off perfectly. This highly sought after radio is sure to be the main attraction in any room of the home or office you choose to display it in. The airplane style backlit dial is quite attractive. It lights nice and bright with a warm orange glow. It features an ivory background with black letters and numbers. Two world globes are featured in the center of the dial along with an arrow pointer. Everything on the dial is legible and shows very little signs of wear. The dial also lights three different ways. The surrounding brass escutcheon portrays the Atwater Kent name at the top and model number 145 on the bottom. All four wood knobs are in great shape and control tone, on/off & volume, tuning, and band switch. The 1930′s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring an antique. Gold color with a stylish herringbone design. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. With the included copper line antenna the radio performs very well. The Cabinet’s Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 12 3/4″W x 14 3/4″H x 8D.
