Mahagony, and the 205 was made of maple wood. The cabinet is all original and there is only very minor wear. The radio is powered by 6 tubes and has a very capable 5 inch speaker. These models are not often found with the brass / gold tone top vent bezel in such nice condition this radio was well cared for! A new dial lamp was installed, the radio was polished to a using just a very mild plastic polish and now it looks fabulous and is ready for years of use. The cabinet is in very good condition, however, there is some wear consistent with age such as blemishes and imperfections on the top, bottom, sides, bottom, and back but very difficult to see in normal light and nothing that detracts from the overall look. This radio is perfect for collectors or as a functional display piece to show off in your office or home & will go with any décor! And it would also make a unique gift! You will enjoy listening to it for years to come. And with Christmas just around the corner it would make a great gift for that someone special or even for yourself! General Electric Radios Historical Significance. Have you heard of the saying from Henry Ford regarding the Model-T motor car? Well, radio manufacturers had a similar philosophy for many years. There were some colorful 1930s Catalin models and some other unique and distinctive radios, but by and large radios were just wood finished cabinets. Even the initial production of Bakelite cabinets was primarily wood-toned brown in color. GE began to change that – in the early 1940s; GE was offering its new line of table radios in either a traditional brown Bakelite cabinet or in an ivory-colored version. Then Following World War II, the company began introducing more colors as a marketing tool in its lines of consumer products as well as radios which changed the future dynamic for both consumer products and radios. Singer Doris Day begins a solo career, Al Jolson rerecords his old hits and becomes a superstar to the post-war generation as well, and B. King begins working as a professional musician in Memphis TN! Perry Comos Prisoner of Love and Frank Sinatras Five Minutes More had the #1 and #2 hits songs of the year respectively. Dimension: 12″ in length X 8″ high X 7 in depth. I use plenty of Bubble Wrap, extra padding and double box or use extra box support material. It will be marked Fragile & This side up on the box to make sure it is handled carefully. The radio is fully insured. If there are any problems, please contact me and we can review options. The cabinet finish is original with no cracks and it sounds great. A nice accompaniment to go with your new Radio and ready for framing! Its a great companion piece to this unique set. Emerson and Catalin Collectors – Dont let this rare one slip by! Offered with no Reserve and a very low starting price!! This 5 tube radio sounds great with clear and rich sounds coming from its original 4.5 inch speaker. You will love listening to it for many years to come. Made in the USA by Emerson Radio & Phonograph Corp; New York (NY) Chassis # is 120029. Servicing Details: This Emerson was electronically serviced by a professional. The tubes were tested and tested OK, the chassis was cleaned and controls lubricated, the dial light was replaced. The cabinet is all original and has been buffed to a beautiful glass like shine. The dial lens is original and clear with just a small hairline. The silver ball tuning dial is flawless. Emerson 520 had some interesting variations, and made models similar to the 520 on virtually the same chassis of varying materials. The 520 model had many variations which made it unique – its grill cover panel had either round or square holes and was either black or ivory in color, with either red or beige grill cloth. The frequency numbers in the round dial were either in a 180 degree pattern or 360 degree pattern. Dials colors were either gold, black or blue. Tubes were metal or glass. This particular 520 model is less common and has a gold dial with the silver ball tuning indicator. And an ivory colored styrene grill cover and beige grill cloth! Principle: Super Heterodyne; ZF/IF 455 kHz; 2 AF stage(s). Wave bands: Broadcast only (MW). Power type & voltage: AC/DC-set / 105-125 Volt. Loudspeaker: Permanent Magnet Dynamic 4.5 inch. Catalin is a brand name for a thermosetting polymer popular in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1930s, radio design became more important to consumers and Art Deco was in full swing. The radio market called for more visual appeal and designers didnt disappoint. Catalin was a newer material developed in the 1920s that was leveraged to support the new Art Deco influenced cabinet designs of legendary radio makers like Fada and Emerson. Catalin used a special resin formula which created a variety of bright colors. Catalin cabinets stand out from their Bakelite and plaskon cousins due to their thickness and polished feel. They appear translucent as well as brightly colored. These beautiful radios are great example of innovation that arose during the depression era and occupy a special place in the hearts of collectors. Emerson 520 Magazine Advertisement from 1946.
