Vintage 1945 RCA Victor Model 56X3 Mahogany Cabinet Vacuum Tube Radio (restored). This beautiful 1945 solid wood vacuum tube table radio has been completely electronically restored, using all new modern reliable electronic components and is completely functional and safe to use. It was made from a beautiful hand-crafted solid wood Mahogany cabinet by the professional furniture artisans, at the Camden NJ RCA factory. The finish is absolutely un-touched original factory OEM. Not re-lacquered, re-stained, or touched up. It does have a few minor scuffs, as to be expected, but in otherwise beautiful original condition. (see pics). The original back-board was missing, which is typical since they were only made of cardboard and subject to rotting over time. However, a new backboard was handmade from pressed non-corrugated cardboard, that exactly matches the original OEM backboard. The radio is mostly all original with the exception of the backboard mentioned above, the tubes that were replaced and the electronic components used to restore the circuitry. It still has its original OEM knobs, grille cloth, loudspeaker and hardware, and retains its original look and patina. It picks up lots of stations up and down the band and the tone is loud and clear. It features a built-in loop antenna, which completely eliminates the need for an external antenna wire. The chassis and tuning condenser are clean with no rust or corrosion. The Mahogany wood cabinet still has its original finish and patina, and is in great condition. The dial scale glass is bright and clear with no cracks or scratches, and the background plate is clean. The dial scale lettering is still vividly colored and completely intact, and the pointer needle is in “like-new” condition. The knobs are the original OEM knobs and are clean and shiny. The loudspeaker is still like new and has no rubbing or distortion, and sounds loud and clear. The original backboard was missing, but has been replaced. All tubes checked and replaced where needed. All paper wax capacitors replaced. All power supply filter capacitors replaced. All resistors checked and replaced where needed. Cleaned and vacuumed chassis and tuning condenser. Polarized power safety line cord installed. Treated the Mahogany cabinet with wood rejuvenating replenishing oils. Replaced dial scale pilot light bulb. Replaced corroded circuit wiring where needed. Replaced dial string with nylon non-slip dial scale string. Cleaned and lubricated dial scale string pulleys. Treated volume control and switches with tuner cleaner. Tuned circuits to factory specifications to regain original channel selectivity and reception. Bench tested chassis for several days to ensure proper performance, stability and operation. NOTE – Power supply safely changes. Perhaps the most important change made to this radio was with the power supply circuitry. It has been rewired to eliminate the built-in shock hazard design flaw, commonly known as the “Hot Chassis”. Most of the A/C D/C radios from this era had the “Hot Chassis” issue, which was present whether the radio was turned on or off. If you were to touch the chassis and a ground source such as a water pipe or steam radiator at the same time, there was a 50% chance that you were in for a nasty shock! This was a result of designing the circuits to run on either A/C (alternating house current), or D/C (batteries), which was needed back then because many homes and most farms had no electrical service or wiring yet. The trade-off to making this change was to disable the ability for the radio to run on batteries. Not a great loss compared to the personal safety factor gained!
