This transceiver looks pretty good. The cabinet has some paint flaked off (see photos), but overall it looks nice. The front panel is in terrific condition. Inside, it looks to be free of modification and all components look original. The function (mode) switch feels a little soft and may need attention. The rest of the controls feel good. This one will make an excellent candidate for restoration! This piece of equipment is believed to have not been used in years (possibly decades). It will almost certainly need some level of service. This may include: replacement of electrical components (such as capacitors, resistors, diodes, tubes, etc), cleaning of controls, alignment, and so forth. If you’re not qualified to do this work yourself, we’re happy to provide you with a list of qualified technicians available for hire. Up for sale is a used Vintage Hallicrafters S-40a Ham Tube Radio Shortwave Receiver that Lights Up. Introduced in 1951 as an upgrade for the S-53, the 8 tube S-53A is a transformer-operated single-conversion general coverage receiver with a separate oscillator and mixer and two stages of IF. The major difference between the earlier 53 and the “A” model is the use of small IF transformers in the “A”. It also covers 48 to 54.5 MHz, the 6 meter band. In size, the S-53A is only slightly larger than the S-38. Shows some signs of wear from age and use. The outer metal case has some grime and minor corrosion, as well as some of the metal on the inside. All functionality works as far as I can tell. The speaker cone has a few small tears but still sounds fine. I fixed a couple of splits in the wires to the speaker with solder and electrical tape. All of the tubes inside work. The two inner lamps both work. The knobs and switches are slightly dirty but in good condition otherwise. I cleaned the volume and sensitivity control terminals so they are no longer scratchy sounding. The power cord may not be original, but is in good condition. Please see photos for more details. This receiver is for parts or repair only. I plugged the radio in and it powers on. Some of the tubes in the chassis glow when powered on, a couple do not. I could only get static to come through the speaker but I did not have an antenna hooked up to the radio. The radio is in Good to Average cosmetic condition. Appears complete and original including Hallicrafters tubes. The radio has all of its toggle switches and knobs present and intact on the radio. (1 large knob has a light chip or defect on edge). All of the knobs and switch work as they should. Cord was repaired many years ago and has electrical tape. The radio does show the normal signs of use with minor surface scratches and scuffs (please see pictures). The radio measures approx. 13 1/4 long by 6 1/2 tall by 8 1/4 deep. Weight 15 lb 4 oz. Also in good cosmetic condition overall – shows some wear in spots, but nothing major. It is missing a few letters on the logo on the front of the case. The extending antenna on the top measures approx. 46 inches long when fully extended. See all the photos. Also comes with some extra tubes in original boxes stored on the inside (see the photo – each box does have something in it – appear to be new but I cannot guarantee functionality of these tubes). 105-120V AC-DC, 20 Watts, Or 90 Volt B & 9 Volt A Batteries (I did not test with batteries, only with the included original Power Cord). Description: Broadcast Receiver & CW. Condition: Restored by Mike’s Radio Restoration. This radio plays well, tuning in many local/distant stations. The cabinet is in excellent shape showing minor. Wear from age and use. This is a very collectible radio. And highly sought after. Measures: 13 x 8 x 7. Weighs: 9.9 lbs. Please view the photos as they are part of the description.
