1940s Fada “Cloud” radio. No cracks, chips, or hairlines. There are two or three tiny rough spots (difficult to photograph or see with the eye) that can be felt under the finger near the top of the radio above its dial (see the last photograph). It powers on and receives stations across its dial. Additional photographs available upon request. Please see our other items!

Vtg 1941-46 FADA Temple 659 Catalin Radio Butterscotch Bakelite AM/ Shortwave
1941-46
Comments Off
This one is in very nice vintage condition and has no cracks in the plastic that I can see. Please look at all pictures for condition and coloring as each one of these radios has individual characteristics and shading and coloring from age- this should clean up nicely if your wish is to restore the Catalin and know how to polish it- or keep its natural patina. The tuner window glass is not chipped or broken. All internals seem intact and as they should be but this radio has not been power tested due to the condition of the cord- it is brittle and has bare wire showing. The tuner cord is intact and works smoothly and moves the pointer across the glass. While the tuner knob turns smoothly- the on/off/volume knob is stiff/stuck and I did not want to force it to turn so. And cleaning will be. Necessary to make this a working unit. The cardboard back has a model # of 562 on it in faded print so this was either a mistake or substitution from the factory due to supply issues after war OR this radio was missing its cardboard back at some point in its life and someone put a model 562 one of it (they are the same shape and size and are interchangeable)- this is of course a model 659 because of the extra shortwave tuner in it. Please note that it is possible that the internal guts may have been replaced at some point with the model 562 radio and there is no shortwave tuner- I do not know or have any experience with the difference so please look closely at all pictures. Either way- the case is in very nice condition and the glass and tuner scale especially is super rare to find. These are the only two obvious issues with this radio that I could find, other than the cord. Information as found in the internet about his radio. Number of Tubes- 6. Main principle- Superhet with RF-stage; ZF/IF 456 kHz; 2 AF stage(s). Wave bands–Broadcast only (MW). Power type and voltage–AC/DC-set. Loudspeaker–Permanent or electro-dynamic (moving coil), system not known yet. Material–Catalin (a brand name for a thermosetting polymer popular in the 1930s and 1940s – a phenol formaldehyde resin – like Bakelite, but a two-stage process with a lot of work afterwards). Model: 659 – Fada Radio & Electric Co. Shape–Tablemodel, with any shape – general. Dimensions (WHD)–11 x 6.75 x 6.25 inch / 279 x 171 x 159 mm. Short wave version of Model 652. 528 to 1640 for broadcast and 5.7 to 18.3 mc for international short wave. Net weight (2.2 lb = 1 kg). 6 lb 0 oz (6 lb) / 2.724 kg.

The gold dial is beautiful when lit. The ON/OFF knob is also the tone control, with separate knobs for volume, station selection and band selection. Cabinet, 6 speaker, grill, dial, knobs and back are all original. The crystal clear dial cover is a replacement. 14″ W x 9″ H x 7 D, 10 lbs. Look over the pictures carefully to make sure the condition of this exceptional radio is acceptable to you. They offer a better external description than I could. If you have any questions, please contact me. I ran the radio about a half hour before packing it to make sure it was working properly. Please don’t mess with the electronics unless you’re experienced working on vintage radios due to the presence of high voltages. You probably won’t need to for quite a while with this one, anyway. Since this radio is old, I can’t guarantee anything, but FedX has been doing a great job delivering them undamaged. Of course, please let me know immediately if you have a problem. I’d like you to enjoy this radio as much as I have (and hate to part with). This item is in the category “Consumer Electronics\Vintage Electronics\Vintage Audio & Video\Vintage Radios”. This radio DOES power up. It produces static, but I could not tune in any radio stations. ONE knob is MISSING. The cosmetic condition shows some scratching and light overall wear, but no visible cracks or breaks. NOTE: This is an estate piece and will most likely need to be serviced.
