Ferguson 384U Radio Working Vintage 1955 Early FM Valve Tube Radio MW LW SW. Manufactured in the UK by Ferguson, model Finesse 384U was an early FM set, releasing in 1955 (the year FM was made available in the UK). The 6-valve design is capable of picking up LW, MW, SW and FM signals (although note that these are limited to lower-band frequencies like radio 2, etc). The radio is a mains-powered tabletop model, housed in an attractive bakelite case measuring. 440 x 330 x 180 mm. In respect of condition, the radio is i. N excellent cosmetic condition. The radio works well on MW and LW wavebands, but does take a minute or two to warm up, which seems a little unusual. Once this has been replaced it will likely work, but may require an external aerial for best results. In the latter case, we will send you an invoice ASAP. This is a very early 75S-1, serial number 178. Aside from the serial number, you can also tell this is an early unit by the “ribbed” design of the meter’s bezel. The faceplate looks good and appears to be all original, however the cabinet has been repainted (somewhat crudely). The power cord has been replaced and fixed in place, although we’re not sure how as we haven’t removed the receiver from the cabinet. The bad news is that the receiver has problems. It receives no signal whatsoever, even from the crystal calibrator. On top of that, whenever you tap the cabinet or chassis, you get a ringing tone. The sound is similar to what you’d hear from a microphonic tube. However, we don’t think a tube is causing the problem. Considering the age of this vintage amplifier it does show many signs of that with some scuffs, scratches and light dent marks. Considering the age of this transmitter it does show some signs of ware with age such as scuff marks, dents an scratches. That mentioned this radio also has some slight yellowing with age. This unit does sit a little un-even and is missing a leg. This heathkit was unable to be tested leaving the full operation unknown. All this radios knobs do turn freely except for the band switch is stiff and will probably need cleaning. This transmitter came from a radio collectors estate sale.
