AC Mains Small Table Radio. Belmont Radio Corp, Chicago. Length – 11.5. A particularly attractive, unusual and very well-made model recently recovered from long-term storage. His sales will both assist him in relocating to sheltered accommodation and set his mind at rest concerning the future of his much-loved radios. Ive had no luck in finding any other examples of this one online or discovering the model number – perhaps the collectors out there will be able to assist in identifying and dating it. I have learned that Belmont Catered for the higher end of the market with many lovely designs released including a range of better-known models with ornate Bakelite cases but that few examples can be found on this side of the Atlantic. Cosmetically this radio is worthy of display just as it is having emerged from many decades of storage in very clean condition. The front panel is veneered ply, the rest of the case is solid wood and there are some lovely details – the circular top grille vent, the bright metal dial surround and the dial itself with a globe motif. The back panel is a solid louvred metal part rather than the flimsy fibreboard usually found. Theres plenty of patina and signs of age and wear but perhaps it would be a shame to restore it cosmetically – the original finish still has a glossy shine and it looks very pretty sitting on a shelf or table. As you can see, a 2-pin Bakelite plug is fitted. There is one missing valve so its definitely not in working condition as-is but the chassis is clean and complete otherwise and it certainly looks as if this radio could be brought back to life by a knowledgeable hand. I hope this interesting old machine will be considered worthy of a place in another nice collection or as a charming display piece.
