The mahogany cabinet on this 1946 radio is just beautiful. With the mastery of design that Stromberg Carlson is known for, this “Sonnet” radio is just a sight to behold. The lyre grill piece adds style, grace and balance for an exquisite delight. The curved glass dial and detailed trim just add further to the attractiveness of it. The sound is great too! With six tubes and an internal loop antenna, it has very good sensitivity and selectivity. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet retains the original stain, which has been rejuvenated and nourished. The bottom trim was redone with dark mahogany toners. The entire cabinet was then given six coats of quality clear lacquer to match the original finish as close as possible. It was then waxed with a quality beeswax/orange oil polish to further enhance and protect the finish. There are a few minor dings that are often part of a radios life, and, as can be seen in the photos, a stabilized and repaired crack to the left, rear side. The glass dial face/cover is in excellent condition with crisp and clear graphics that are gently lit for a soothing appearance. The original wooden knobs were refinished with a same process as the cabinet. The period correct grill cloth is a new replacement. The power cord was replaced. Felt pads were added to protect your furniture. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna. There is an antenna post on the back to add an external antenna wire if needed for your locale to improve reception. I did not need it in my area of Pittsburgh PA. To quote singer Tom Jones, “It has style, it has grace, it’s a winner”! This wonderful table radio is a must for the collector and anyone with an appreciation for the quality of craftsmanship in a post WWII radio. Since being restored, it will bring reliable enjoyment for many years to come if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off.
