The case as close to museum quality as you can get. This radio has been serviced electronically. The electronics were gone through with all tubes being checked and testing strong, the chassis was cleaned, and the controls were cleaned and lubricated. The case has been polished meticulously and now has a mirror shine!! The cord is pliable with no cracks. The original label remains mostly intact on the bottom. They either had a 723 or 724 model designation with an H, Y, or T in front. The sound was truly something impressive compared to its predecessors and the competition. They came in many variations over the years. Colors such as Brown, Grey, Grey/White, Brown/Ivory, Green, and solid white. Some had metal bezels, while others were body color. Some had carrying handles. The pointers were either metal with a gold finish, or plastic with the color the same as the cabinet. Grilles had either cloth with a metal mesh, or were a mesh plastic. The backlit dial works as it should as well be sure to check out both the video and the first two pictures! The radio dial turns green when playing shortwave and it turns red when playing a broadcast station. The wood cabinet is nice and solid and the finish looks nice! There are some minor scrapes, etc. Like you might expect on a piece from this era. The radio measures approximately 11 3/4 by 8 1/2 by 9 3/4. Later, William Sparks became a partner and the company changed its name to the Sparks-Withington Company. They first made steel parts for agricultural equipment but when the automobile industry began to take ahold in Michigan, they added hub caps, brake drums and radiator fans to their product line. It was during this time that Sparks-Withington began to use of the trade name “Sparton”. Spartons first major product innovation came in 1911 when the all-electric car horn was developed. The Hudson Automobile Company adopted the Sparton electric horn as standard equipment. They started making radios by the 1920s with battery powered radios and then they made the country’s first all-electric radio, promoted as Radio’s Richest Voice. During World War I, Sparton made horns for Army vehicles, helmets and hand-grenade assemblies. By the 1930s, at the height of the Art Deco style movement, Sparton began to innovate in their radio business by designing what are known today as some of the most collectible radios in the world. With the help of famed designer Walter Dorwin Teague, Sparton made the now famous. Nocturne, Bluebird, and the Sled. They were a style sensation and today are the most expensive antique radios to collect. When new, the sets did not sell too well due to their higher prices and the advent of the Great Depression. By the 1950s, Sparton’s radio and TV business was struggling and a decision was made to cease radio and TV production by 1956. Sparks-Withington officially changed their name to Sparton Corporation in 1956. Today, the company is still is in business and is one of the largest producers of aerospace, defense, and medical products.
