Here is a very beautiful Philco 70 athedral Radio from the estate of a well-known northern California radio collector (for over 40 years). He suddenly passed away recently and his collection of over 350 radios came up for sale. All radios were in beautiful to mint condition and all were stored or displayed in his home. They all weathered the years very well. This estate is different in the sheer number of radios involved and the overall physical condition of each (better than most I have seen), plus many of these radios go back to the very early 1920′s to which I do not wish to power up and spend a lot of time on. These radios were collected over the years by a very serious collector and put on display by him and should be owned now by another serious collector. This specific radio, the Philco 70, is from 1931 and is great working order. The dial calibration is right on and the radio brings in many stations up and down the dial with clear and loud volume. We have a lot of Philco 70′s and 90′s come into my shop but this specific one is in superb condition when compared to those. The interior is clean with hardly any dust – it has obviously been kept in good condition. This item does not come up for sale very often so don’t let it get away. The item “Very Nice 1931 Vintage Philco 70, Works Great” is in sale since Thursday, April 4, 2019. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone\Radios\Tube Radios\1930-49″. The seller is “ee-maestro” and is located in Sacramento, California. This item can be shipped to United States, Canada, Bahamas, Uruguay.

This stunningly beautiful radio is a very rare and collectible find. There is no model number that I could find anywhere in my research, but, with some sleuthing found the chassis is a US Radio model 99A. They made chassis for a number of different manufacturers and also combined with Apex radio at some point in the 1930′s. It is doubtful you will see another of this radio for sale for a long time, if ever. This Radiotrope cathedral cabinet is quite ornate, with a delicate grill and front carvings, yet bold columns. Using five tubes, it receives well with a 5 foot external antenna lead and sounds just great with rich sound through a large speaker. The cabinet is in excellent condition. The original finish was removed, retaining the original stain, which was rejuvenated. Toners were used on the base trim and front. The entire cabinet was given six coats of clear lacquer, then hand waxed to further nourish the wood and enhance the beauty. I believe the matching knobs are original. The dial is clear and very well lit from behind. The grill cloth and power cord have been replaced. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. There are very few minor dings commensurate with age that can be seen in the photos if you look closely. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The speaker was repaired. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the included five foot antenna wire lead. At 88 years old, this completely restored radio is a. Example of the ornate early cathedral radios. It is ready for use and to display as a delight for the eyes and ears. If well cared for, it should last many more years. Dimensions: 17×15.5×8.5. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off. This unique and stunning cube-like radio really stands out with three different veneer inlays, large dial face and columned corners. Add the stylish speaker/ grill on the top and it is one classy looking radio. While inconclusive, it appears this and others of this model radio was a prototype, as it did not have its own label. The one in this radio is marked Model 417 operating at 55 watts. That is crossed out and penciled in is 517 and 70 watts. That is consistent with what other owners report. This radio has five tubes, while model 417 only has four. The old original finish was removed, but the cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated and toners used on the trim and other areas to return it to the original look. The cabinet does have two minor areas of repair as can be seen in the photos – at the top, right side at the bend and the left column, midway. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition. The multicolored dial face graphics are crisp and clear, nicely lit by the pilot light. It has the original glass dial cover and the wooden knobs are original. The power cord was replaced, using the original Bakelite plug. The speaker grill cloth is new. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper and electrolytic capacitors replaced. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using a three foot external wire antenna. Sought after by collectors, it is a prize to possess. Those wanting a focal point for their decor will not find a nicer representative than this radio. And, since it is now restored, this 1936 radio will last another 82 years if well care for and cherished, just as it should be. This radio will be, as with all of my radios, packaged with utmost care to greatly minimize damage risk.
