Vintage 1949 Philco Transitone Model 49-500 Vacuum Tube Radio Code-121 restored. This beautiful 1949 Art Deco walnut Bakelite vacuum tube table radio comes from a non-smoking environment and has no foul odors or nicotine residue. It has been electronically restored and is safe and stable to use. It has been given a new life and should last for another 76 years. The radio has been kept as original as possible with the exception of the tubes that were replaced and the electronic components used to restore the circuitry. It has an internal built-in loop antenna that that provides good strong reception, eliminating the need for an external antenna wire and plays loud and clear. The chassis has no rust or corrosion and the Walnut colored Bakelite case is clean and shiny. The case has some light scuffs as to be expected, but is in overall excellent condition. Note: There is a small crack in the lower left side of the case, which has been professionally repaired from the inside with high-strength clear epoxy and fiberglass screening. It’s barely visible (see pics) and is now actually stronger than before! The dial scale window is clean, transparent and clear with no yellowing or opaque hazing. The speaker is in excellent condition and sounds loud and clear. The original back-board was missing (as with most of these old radios), however, a new one was hand-made from real wood veneer and pressboard to replace it – (see pics). Check and replaced weak tubes where needed. Replace power supply circuit filter capacitors. Replace all tubular wax capacitors regardless of condition. Check and replace all out of tolerance resistors. Replaced damaged volume control pot. Install new polarized power cord. Install new pilot light bulb. Replaced all corroded wiring. Fabricated a custom back-board to replace the missing back-board. Aligned tuned circuits to Mfg specifications. Repaired crack in case with high-strength epoxy. Bench tested for 3 days to ensure stability and safe operation. NOTE – Power supply safely modification. Most of the AC/DC radios from this era had a shock hazard design flaw affectionately known as the “Hot Chassis”, which was present whether the radio was turned on or off. If you were to touch the chassis and at the same time touch a ground source such as a water pipe, there was a 50% chance that you were in for a nasty shock! This was the result of designing the circuits to run on either AC (alternating house current), or DC (direct current), which was needed back then because many homes and most farms had no A/C electric service. They either had (Edison) direct current, or no wiring at all and ran their radios on batteries. The Power supply circuitry in this radio has been custom rewired to eliminate this built-in shock hazard and is now safe. As long as the electrical outlet is correctly wired according to US standard electrical building code (NEC), or NFPA 70 building code, which is true with all electrical household appliances. The trade-off to this change is that the radio can no longer run on D/C or batteries. Not a great loss compared to the safety factor gained! Country: United States of America (USA). Valves / Tubes: (5) 35Z5, 35A5, 7A8, 14A7, 7C6. Main principle: Superheterodyne (common); ZF/IF 455 kHz; 2 AF stage(s). Wave bands: Broadcast only (MW). Power type & voltage: AC/DC-set / 105-120 Volt. Loudspeaker: Permanent Magnet Dynamic (PDyn) Loudspeaker (moving coil) / Ø 4 inch = 10.2 cm. Material: Bakelite case. Shape: Table model without push buttons, Mantel/Midget/Compact up to 14. Dimensions (WHD): 10.5 x 6.5 x 6 inch / 267 x 165 x 152 mm. See pictures for content and condition. Reproduction Knight Broadcaster kit. NOTE : We sell two versions of this kit, a point-point wired version like the original in this listing, and our NEW, easier assembly, PC board version. See our other listings for that version. In addition to the gallery photos, this listing has extra photos with captions in the body below, scroll down to see them all. Kit comes with dual 115/230 volt primary transformer, for people in countries requiring 230 volts operation. Kit does not include tubes. Kit includes a BONUS audio input board! The Knight Broadcaster was meant to be used with low level microphone inputs. High level signals will distort the output, unless the input is attenuated. To ease this problem, as well as improve connectivity to audio sources, we have designed an accessory input control board. The kit includes a small 2-3/8 x 2-3/8 PC board (same blue color), to allow easy connection of bare wire, RCA, or 3.5mm jack inputs! The board also features an isolation transformer, if you experience hum problems. See photos in listing below. This is a reproduction kit of the Knight Wireless Broadcaster – Amplifier. High level inputs can be from a MP3 player, iPod, iPhone, cassette player, etc.. The kit also functions as a PA (Public Address) style audio amplifier, and has connections you can hook up a loudspeaker too. This is a custom produced kit, and has no economies of scale, and is therefore more costly than the PC board version. The kit is electrical equivalent to the original, with several minor changes. Our design includes a brand new, high quality, Triad isolation transformer. Appropriate changes has been made for mounting the transformer on the back, and for internal wiring. We have replaced the selenium rectifier with a modern diode. The kit comes with a prewound oscillator coil. As shown in the internal wiring photo, modern filter capacitors, smaller rectifier diode and oscillator coil, give easier and increased assembly and working room! To keeps costs as low as possible, the kit does NOT come with tubes. The tubes (two 50C5 and one 12AX7) are common types, and readily available from many sources. We have gone to great effort, time and expense to acquire vintage style components, like those used in the original design. As shown in the parts photos, the kit currently uses vintage parts, including carbon composition resistors (may be vintage or modern manufacture), phenolic wafer tube sockets, vintage terminal strips, and a vintage compression tuner capacitor. As time progresses on, these parts become harder and harder to find, and at some point may be replaced with modern equivalents. Until otherwise noted, the kit will come with the vintage parts just mentioned. The prototype in the photos used a couple carbon film resistors, but kits will come with ALL carbon composition resistors. The kit now uses black oxide screws to assemble the panels, instead of the costly blue screws shown in the photos. Style of output transformer may vary, depending on our stock. Color of line cord may vary. NOTE: This kit requires good electrical and mechanical building skills, and is recommended for advanced builders. Some mechanical modifications are required, such as cutting the metal potentiometer shaft to the correct length, enlarging the tube sockets holes, etc.. The kit is constructed with individual fiberglass panels for the top, front, back and sides. These are fiberglass printed circuit boards, with high durability lettering. The bottom panel is an acrylic or similar plastic material, it’s color may vary or be clear. The parts are connected by plastic brackets and screws, as you can see in the internal view photo. The original manual is supplied as a PDF file on a CD-R. An addendum assembly file is supplied as a RTF file on the CD-R. Note we do not supply copies of manuals. The kit is only for sale people with experience building and operated line powered devices. The kit must be operated under FCC Part 15 regulations at all times. This unit must only be operated with the supplied line isolation transformer. Not for sale to, or use by minors. It is assumed that the unit(s) will be installed and operated by qualified personnel. See our other listings for more Radio, Electronic and other RARE and UNIQUE items. NOTE : The flat and reflective surfaces cause some reflections in the photos. Vertical’lines’ on the front panel are reflections from the corrugated cardboard the unit was photographed on. With fiberglass panels and stainless steel hardware, your kit will look good for many years! Kit now features black oxide panel connecting screws, not blue screws shown in photos. Modern filter capacitors, rectifier diode and smaller coil, give increased working room. Kit now uses PC mount RCA jacks, see text. All kits now come with 115-230 volt, dual primary transformer. CD-R with original manual, and addendum instruction file. Accessory input control board now included with kit. Board provides RCA, 3.5mm jack, and screw terminal input connections, level control, and isolation transformer. Board can easily mount to panels if desired, see above and below photos. See our other listings, for the PC board version of this kit. See our other listings, for our much lower cost, miniature tube transmitter shown above. See our other listings, for MORE of our EXCLUSIVE PC board kits in the photo below. See our other listings for our EXCLUSIVE PC board kits. Powered by SixBit’s eCommerce Solution.
