This vintage Sparton Model 53 Art Deco Design AC/DC tube radio from the 1930′s era with its original instructions attached on bottom of cabinet is a beautiful piece for any collector and in need to be restored. 1 tube broken and speaker is missing as seen in photos. Made in the United States of Jackson Michigan, it features a unique design and is a great addition to any collection. Although it is not currently working, it has the potential to be a wonderful functional piece with a little bit of restoration. 1947 Sparton 5-AI-16 Vintage Radio / Ivory Working in very good condition. There are a couple of cracks, however, one near the right knob and one on the underside that has been repaired very effectively (see photos).

By removing wire jumpers, the radio can accommodate a power tube 112A in the output stage – or the. 171A tube, with additional bias voltage (using a 2nd 4.5V “C” battery for a -9V grid voltage) and higher anode voltage (using more “B” batteries for plate voltages of 135 or 180 volts). The start of production for this model was in December 1925, but first sale activity was in 1926. Sparton Radio Service Manual. For this model (Manual 1, Bulletin 1) is dated June 1, 1936 and calls for the use of 01-A tubes, which are the much later dome shaped tubes, not the original tube line up! The list “The quantity and types of tubes used in Sparton receiving sets” from 1937 or later also names the tubes used as 01-A. Sparton tubes were most likely used in this model while it was in production, but by the time the Sparton Radio Service Manual was published in 1936, radio manufacturers were using the more generic “01-A” tube nomenclature. Suspect that the original tube lineup was: C-201A C-201A C-201A C-201A C-201A or C-112A, however no documentation has yet been found that actually lists the original tube lineup.
I was able to receive stations on both bands quite readily. The volume was strong and there was minimal background noise. All of the knobs turn smoothly and properly, but the dial indicator is not functioning and will need to be restrung. The finish on the radio is all original and has simply been cleaned and polished with a professional wood wax. There is some wear, most notably on the black trim and there is a small veneer chip on the left top rear corner of the radio (see photos). The chassis is clean, with no evidence of rust and the original power cord is in excellent condition, still flexible. The grill cloth is still intact, with no damage. Unique radio that will be a fine addition to your collection. Do not hesitate to make an offer all will be considered.

Item will be packaged very well and fully insured! Our feedback reflects our packaging skills and loyalty to our customers! This is a rare estate item believed to be from the 1940′s. It is untested, as is, for parts or restoration. We have not plugged this unit in. After a thorough inspection, we noted at least one bad capacitor as pictured. I would personally recommend a full recap prior to plugging in. Aside from that, it’s in excellent cosmetic condition with some light blemishing and a little rust speckled behind the tuner plexi-glass as pictured. Cord has some paint speckles. Overall, very clean inside and out for it’s age! It appears to have been stored in a good environment over the years! Again, untested and strictly for parts/repair or restoration.
