1930 Echophone S-5 Radio. It’s an 8 tube radio. All tubes light up and have life in them. However, the radio signal does not work. The speaker comes on and has a loud hum, I’ve put an RCA cable up to the jack and heard my iPhone through the speaker. So, the speaker is good. I replaced the light for the dial, its new. If I had to guess I’d try to get an antenna and replace some parts under the chassis- after this you should have a working radio. The wood Console & grill has been professionally restored. I had plans to restore this but I’m too busy, it’s halfway done so will make a good project. The dark brown metal cabinet and repwood grill and base are in such good shape that I think it has been totally refinished and if so, nicely done. The only blemishes I could find on this is a little wear on the back identification decal and on the back tip. As you can see in the photos, there is an area about the size of a silver dollar that has been touched up. The flash of the camera made it look a lot worse than it does in person. Thankfully, it is on the back. The repwood grill and base are excellent. The grill cloth has more than likely been replaced as it, too, is excellent. This has new green felt on the bottom and the power cord shows minor wear to the outer cloth covering, no bare wires showing, but one end tip is missing (see photo). I tested this with a 9 volt battery and got the familiar clicking sound so the driver is good (works). 19″ in diameter, 9″ deep and an overall height of 20 1/2. No one will have any trouble seeing this speaker in your collection! I don’t claim to be an expert on these so PLEASE review the photos as they supercede the description. The radio does power on as it should and the backlit dial light works as it should. I was not able to tune in any stations as I do not have an antenna to hook this up to but I did hear a light hum from the speaker. The tuning dial turns as it should. There is a small crack in the dial, around the “40″ mark and some of the numbering and markings are more faint as you get lower on the dial. I believe that the radio is 100% original including the knobs. The cabinet is nice and solid. The radio measures approximately 16 1/2 by 10 by 15 1/4. It weighs approximately 43 pounds. This is a 4 tube a. Radio with two dials, one for on/off/volume and one for tuning. The following things were done to this radio. Tubes checked and replaced if found weak or bad. All old capacitors replaced with modern day equivalents. Original paper capacitor block saved and restuffed with new capacitors to preserve originality. Cabinet touched up around bottom on 2 sides and coated with clear lacquer. Line antenna added for better reception. There is a missing name plate and some missing repwood on a few of the corners and some cracks on the left side (see pictures) but it was not filled in and fixed due to the extreme originality of the radio. The original grill cloth is present and very clean. The original resistance power cord is still present and in remarkably good useable condition. (Always be careful when using a vintage radio with a resistance cord). I bench tested the radio for about a half hour two days in a row and it played well, picking up 7 stations in my area. The resistance cord was warm to the touch but not hot. This is a very original radio that could easily be the focal point of a room and definitely a great conversation piece. It would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection. If you have any questions or would like further pictures please don’t hesitate to ask.
