They are not particularly rare but they are becoming less and less common, and they are uncommon at this level of restoration the quality of the restoration is very nice as you can see from the photos. The 6S229 is highly collectible and sought after for its famous large reflective black dial, for the Lightning Bolt “Z” pointer, the wooden Z etched knobs, the intricate wood latticed grill, and the faux finish, a paper-like film printed & textured to look like wood. The Kadette Radio Story. The Kadette radio brand was founded in the 1920s by an entrepreneur named Charles Verschoor. He started to make radios in Ann Arbor, Michigan with only a limited degree of success initially. Not until 1931, when he started the International Radio Corp did the tide started to turn for Verschoor. The first of these successes was a very small Kadette brand AC/DC radio made of Bakelite. This set marked the beginning of Bakelite radios and of transformer less AC/DC sets. Chicago Molded Products Co. Made the cabinet for Kadette, and the Gothic look gave it a unique design which helped to put the company on the map. Several other popular radios followed in the 1930s and by 1936 Kadette developed the model 35 Telematic with the unique telephone style dial design. Keene Jackson, the General Sales Manager of International Radio Corp bought the radio manufacturing business including the brand Kadette. This new company, called “The Kadette Radio Corp” planned to introduce TV sets. The new company had little success with radios as other makers such as Zenith, RCA, Westinghouse, and GE radio brands began to expand their share of the market. International Radio Corp later had success with cameras and optical equipment with the Argus brand. After World War 2, International Industries became a wholly owned subsidiary of Argus, Inc. And the name International Radio (and Kadette) was gone forever. Its amazing to think that this very radio likely broadcast such historical 1936 events as the. Which further fueled the drum beats of war in Europe. The invention of the first helicopter. Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3 to 1 to win the Stanley cup! And in movie news. This Mid Century Modern radio is powered by 5 tubes, and has a distinctive machine age / jet age inspired design. It sounds great as music passes through its 5 inch original speaker with great selectivity & reception. Is rare as it does not come with a handle. The majority of these models were made with a retractable handle on the top. Also, the knob brights are often missing on this model. It has its original knob brights intact. You can polish them up and keep them original, or if you prefer, they can be repainted back to their original gold color. Also, check out the amazing original back on this radio more on that below the video demo! These radios signified one of the first models to move toward a machine age inspired style with impressive curves and angles, a solid and sturdy dial pointer and heavy use of gold accented trim and some metal. The dial is unique in that it has a clear plastic cover and black lettering. Before looking at the video please click. Now for your viewing and listening pleasure please click PLAY below to look and listen to this radio in action!! Then scroll down below the video to finish reading all the details that makes this radio so exceptional! As you can see and hear from the video, This Admiral sounds amazing it is electronically serviced which is rare for this model and its exterior is in very good original condition! The Admiral 5E22 is a beautiful radio with great sound. Perfect for collectors or as a functional display piece to show off in your office or home & will go with any décor! And it would also make a unique gift! You will enjoy listening to it for years to come! Admiral and Antique Radio Collectors Dont let this one slip by! Made in the USA by Admiral (brand) Continental Radio & Television Co. The chassis is #5E2. This Admiral bears a nearly identical look to its sister radio the 5E23, which is differentiated by its ivory and gold color instead of dark brown and gold. This radio sounds great with plenty of volume and no hum. It has been recently serviced including a new plug installed. All tubes were checked and any weak tubes replaced, the control mechanisms were lubricated as needed. The station alignment is off on the radio which was one service I did not ask for but the radio plays very well. It brings in stations well up and down the dial. There is no slippage in the tuning knob, and the volume control is clean. The exterior has been lightly cleaned with a plastic polish. This is the original factory paint and looks very good as a 63 year old radio, there are some minor imperfections and blemishes here and there, but I could not find anything significant. The plastic bezel surround looks pristine! The knob brights are fully intact and original, however, the finish is worn, they can be polished up to a shine or repainted, or left along as the patina is consistent with a radio over 61 years old. These minor imperfections in no way detract from the overall appearance of the radio. There are no cracks and it is very solid and structurally sound. The is some light soiling on the mesh grill It can probably be cleaned, but I did not try, other than an overall light clean and polish. The original back is in great shape and very unique in that it has a lot of information printed on the back about the radio, including a diagram of the radio’s front controls, thorough. Admiral thought of everything useful that could be printed on the back a first. Admiral was founded by Ross Siragusa and a group of investors in 1934. The company had success right away due to their focus on quality and having an affordable product. By 1939 Admiral ranked number 5 in radio sales. Admiral had great initial success in international markets as well and was one of the most exported brands from the USA by the 1950s. It had plants all over the US and also in Canada, Mexico, Italy, Taipei, & Taiwan. Sadly, by the late 1970s Admiral, like many US radio and TV makers saw a downward trend in sales and quality with increasing competition from Japan. The company went out of business in 1979. They radios today are still sought after by collectors for their unique and functional designs. In radio broadcast history the radio program Dragnet was a hit and had a wide audience despite the increasing popularity of television. Dimension: 11.5″ in length X 7″ high X 6.5 in depth. 1942 Zenith 6D2615 Boomerang! Hello, thank you for your interest – before continuing, please click. On the top right of the page – your homepage will show any new vintage radio listings I offer. Also, please look at the VIDEO DEMO below to see this beautiful radio in action! Known as the. By many collectors. There was also a similar Bakelite version (Model 6D615). Both models are sometimes called the “Darth Vader” radio, given its front mask like appearance. This was one of Zeniths last models before gearing up for war time production as America prepared for WW2. It is powered by 6 tubes. Hum and controls operate as designed with no slipping. The coolest feature of this antique classic – is the sound quality can be adjusted dynamically several different ways by using the 4 tone push button controls on either side of the dial – the controls work – a unique feature for a table radio in its day. I was also able to pull in many stations very well without a wire antenna but a clip on wire would probably make the reception even better. The detail on the cabinet is stunning and the burled wood very distinctive. Zenith was known for their elaborate cases during this era and with the attention to detail on the wood work of this one – it’s a perfect example! Now, please see the VIDEO DEMO below and hear this radio playing! From listening to the VIDEO DEMO , you can see that this radio sounds superb and it brings in stations up and down the dial loud and clear! It’s amazing to think that this very Zenith likely broadcast such historic 1942 news events as the US starting to turn the war around in the Pacific with major offences at Midway and the Coral Sea and the Allies opening a front in North Africa! This radio has been restored electronically. All tubes were tested and any weak ones replaced, capacitors were replaced as needed, the controls were cleaned and lubricated, an alignment was performed. The case was stripped and re-stained using high quality products. The cabinet is in very good condition – it has a nice finish and looks amazing – as with any radio almost 75 years old – there are going to be blemishes and imperfections on the top, sides, back, bottom, and front – but nothing that detracts from the overall look of the radio. There are a couple very minor veneer imperfections, most notably one on the top edge of the front – but not significant. The plug is likely not original. The original back is no longer present – quite common – but one can be obtained from a supplier called Retro Tronics. The knobs look like reproductions – too perfect to be original – if they are original – they’re the best ones I have ever seen on this model. At Zenith – The Quality Goes In Before The Name Goes On! As they said – and this particular example is evidence of that mantra. Made in the USA by ZENITH – these models are not often found in restored working condition and with such a nice restored finish – and even less common with any kind of electronic servicing. Don’t let this opportunity slip by! Dimensions are 16″ in length X 8 high X 7″ in depth. I use plenty of Bubble Wrap, extra padding – and double box or use extra box support material. It will be marked “Fragile” &’This side up on the box to make sure it is handled carefully. The radio is fully insured. If there are any problems, please contact me and we can review options. The RCA Radio Story. RCA was founded in 1919. The Radio Corporation of America – later shortened to RCA – was formed with from a merger of American Marconi wireless and radio patents owned by General Electric, Westinghouse, and others. Stunningly beautiful, highly collectible, 1946 Emerson Model 520. This one with the blue dial I just had a gold dial listed last week! This highly collectible Post war radio is made of Catalin, a rare material developed in the 1930′s sought after for its beautiful brilliant colors and unique – one of a kind, swirl patterns – the exterior is in near mint, pristine like condition with only very minor wear. The detailed orange/brown/yellow swirling of the Catalin looks like flame when displayed in bright light or outside – just beautiful – the radio is also electronically restored and sounds great with very good reception and selectivity! The Emerson 520 is collectible not only because it is made of rare Catalin, but it was also. Designed by the famous Mid Century designer Raymond Loewy, who also designed the Coca-Cola bottle, the streamlined Greyhound bus, and several Studebaker automobiles! Please see the VIDEO DEMO below and hear this radio playing! As you can see and hear, this radio looks and sounds amazing and there is only very minor wear. There are blemishes and imperfections on the top, front, sides, bottom, and back – a small blemish on the left knob, but it looks to be on the surface and stable. There is nothing that really stands out or detracts from the overall look. The dial lens is nearly perfect. For radio collectors that have shied away from Catalin radio’s due to their high price – this Emerson 520 model represents a rare opportunity to start collecting at an affordable level. The cabinet finish is original with no cracks and it sounds great. A nice accompaniment to go with your new Radio and ready for framing! It’s a great companion piece to this unique set. Emerson and Catalin Collectors – Don’t let this one slip by! This 5 Tube radio sounds great with clear and rich sounds coming from its original 4.5 inch speaker. You will love listening to it for many years to come. Made in the USA by Emerson Radio & Phonograph Corp; New York (NY) Chassis # is 120029. Restoration Details: This Emerson was electronically restored by a professional radio restorer where all tubes were tested and any weak ones replaced, any bad wiring replaced, caps replaced as needed, the chassis was cleaned and controls lubricated. The cabinet is all original and has been buffed to a beautiful glass like shine. The style is post- WWII machine age design. Perfect as a functional display piece to show off in your office or home. It would also make a unique gift! It is made of a two tone Catalin, with a white styrene panel checkered grille. It has a right front round dial with a gold dial plate which has the usually shrinkage that happens over time – and the top of the grille plate has a small chip in the top left – it should be visible in some pics but it is hard to see under normal lighting. There are 2 knobs, the left is for on/off/volume, and the right is for tuning. The Dial light works great and glows nicely accentuating the beautiful dial plate and station frequencies. Emerson 520 had some interesting variations. And made models similar to the 520 on virtually the same chassis of varying materials. There was a model 501, model 502, and the model 504 (which was made of wood), also the model 510 was made of wood. The 520 model had many variations which made it unique – its grill cover panel had either round or square holes and was either black or ivory in color, with either red or beige grill cloth. The frequency numbers in the round dial were either in a 180 degree pattern or 360 degree pattern. Dials colors were either gold, black or blue. Tubes were metal or glass. This particular 520 model is less common in that is has a black BAKELITE back, with no chips on the corners (which is uncommon) and it has the blue dial with the white 3 D triangular tuning indicator. And an ivory colored styrene grill cover and beige grill cloth! Principle: Super Heterodyne; ZF/IF 455 kHz; 2 AF stage(s). Wave bands: Broadcast only (MW). Power type & voltage: AC/DC-set / 105-125 Volt. Loudspeaker: Permanent Magnet Dynamic 4.5 inch. Catalin is a brand name for a thermosetting polymer popular in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1930′s, radio design became more important to consumers and Art Deco was in full swing. The radio market called for more visual appeal and designers didn’t disappoint. Catalin was a newer material developed in the 1920′s that was leveraged to support the new Art Deco influenced cabinet designs of legendary radio makers like Fada and Emerson. Catalin used a special resin formula which created a variety of bright colors. Catalin cabinets stand out from their Bakelite and plaskon cousins due to their thickness and polished feel. They appear translucent as well as brightly colored. These beautiful radios are great example of innovation that arose during the depression era and occupy a special place in the hearts of collectors. Emerson 520 Magazine Advertisement from 1946.
