Here we have an absolutely stunning 1937 Crosley model 517′Fiver’ mini tombstone radio featuring a beautiful American Walnut cabinet, lighted mirror dial which creates stunning reflections and 3D like effect, grooved inlays, great Art Deco appeal, and excellent performance. The mini tombstone style cabinet is a real stunner. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. Black trim highlights the top and bottom edges, as well as the rounded sides, adding the perfect contrast. Attractive grooved inlays grace the front of the cabinet outlining the grill and dial. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Everything comes together magnificently with the amazing lighted mirror dial. It is quite the sight to behold with the reflections its casts while either in a bright room, or dark room when the dial lamp is illuminated. This little beauty is sure to be the main attraction of any room in the home or office you choose to display it in. The lighted mirror dial is simply amazing. One of the most attractive dials any radio has to offer. This is the early version of Crosley’s famous mirror dial as it features a silver mirror back, coupled with a protruding glass front, which displays all the station frequencies and Crosley’s red world globe in reverse paint. This causes a magnificent 3D like effect with spectacular reflections. Very unique from any other radio dials. Whether the reflections are cast by natural light during the day, or by the bright dial lamp in a dark room, it is quite the sight! The dial glass and mirror have been polished and are in great shape showing virtually no signs of wear. All three knobs are perfect and work as follows; on/off & volume, tuning, and band switch. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a. Gold color with a herringbone design. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. I’m able to receive many stations, with good tone and plenty of volume. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 10 1/2W x 12 1/2H x 6 3/4D. I’m not really sure, but truly looks like the real thing, but no guarantees. I have used it to place my original bluebird radio that i own on it to resemble the plateau base that was optional in 1936 and the color is an exact match. It measures approximately 14 1/4 ” across and the inside hole measures approx 6 1/4 “. The light green felt appears to be very old and very original as well. This would be ideal for a collector who needs to replace a damaged cobalt bluebird radio front mirror. There is no damage, chips, cracks or crazing. I’ve included photos of the 1936 sparton 566 bluebird radio that i own sitting on what might have been a plateau base or an original bluebird radio front mirror that is for sale. The item “Vintage Sparton 566 Bluebird Radio Front Mirror Glass Original 1936″ is in sale since Sunday, April 05, 2015. It was designed by walter dorwin teague. Beautiful blue glass mirror surrounds the radio and also comes with its original blue glass mirror base or plateau. Its all original and authentic never been touched and will come just as you see it! Stands an impressive 15″ high and 14-1/4″ wide.. I’m not an expert on antique radios but i will describe what i see.. First off, yes it does have damage (see photo) off to the side you will see 3 cracks in the mirror and one of the round wooden black feet is missing. The plateau is 14-1/4wide an also has a small underside bruise & chip on the edge (see photo).. With that said, i plugged the radio in and it works right now (see video) and also comes with its original paper pamphlet that was folded up and stored in the back of the radio.. The center dial face doesn’t seem to light up could be something simple to fix and my thoughts are that the plateau could be cut to replace the radio mirror and the small damage spot on the plateau will be covered up by the round black wood foot.. So, yes it can be done! Or if you own any of the art deco blue mirror tops from end tables those could be cut as well to refurbish the radio.. The chrome on the radio looks be in good condition and will need a good cleaning and polishing.. The radio dial face that has the sparton name on it is in great condition with no fading, it just my pictures are not the best to show that. Its a great radio and worthy of restoration! Anything else i’ve left out just ask and ill try my best to answer it.. (below is a video of the radio working). Larger & heavier items. There has been a lot of interest in this radio and specially the plateau it sits on. Both piece are 100% original and with there original felt backing, guaranteed! The plateau was offered thru the company but as an extra piece back in 1936 and did not come with the radio. The item “Vintage Sparton 566 Bluebird Radio Art Deco Blue Mirror Glass Original 1936″ is in sale since Sunday, March 29, 2015.
