RARE 1938 Stewart Warner MAGIC KEYBOARD vintage ART DECO vacuum tube RADIO

A very seldom offered or seen model, it is listed in price guides as a model #97-52, but the chassis is stamped with a #91-51. I think the chassis was used in other models after a simple google search. This streamlined mid century radio has a high gloss piano finish having been professionally restored cosmetically and electronically. The curly maple blonde with ebony finish cabinet is as art deco as was made in the pre-war era. The chrome grill bars add a very fine accent. This model features the preset push buttons and this radio was advertised as having a “Magic Keyboard”. Horizontal dial scale, this radio is ready to play, display, and enjoy!! Electronically, the chassis was completely gone over and is playing well. My technician has thoroughly restored the electronics, and added the auxiliary jack. This is a rare Depression era art deco radio that needs to be displayed, played, and enjoyed!! An exceedingly rare addition to your collection! IF you are looking for a bargain, and enjoy the pleasure that is derived from doing your own restoration at your pace, please check out these most affordable radios. You can listen to Spotify, IHeart, Pandora, Sirius XM, and many FM radio stations through this old vintage radio. The original cabinet finish is in great condition with a few minor bumps and bruises that attest to its long life, but the overall appearance is still very good. There is no missing veneer and the finish is in very nice original condition. It sounds good, too, with a replacement speaker. The sensitivity and selectivity are good, using a six foot external antenna (provided). There is a bass/treble control for your listening preference. The ever pleasing green magic eye is bright and shows up well against the black dial face. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost detail. The radio was completely disassembled and cleaned. The cabinet was gone over with a very fine steel wool, then rejuvenated to quench and nourish the wood. It was then given three coats of a beeswax/orange oil polish over two weeks to further enhance the beauty of and to protect the wood. The knobs and push buttons are original and polished. The dial face shows some minor wear in one area, but the remainder is crisp and clear and nicely lit from the pilot light. The dial cover is new and crystal clear. The power cord was replaced. As with all radios of this era having tenite materials, the bezels for the dial face and push buttons are in less than good condition- see photos. Felt pads were added to the underside to protect your furniture. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The speaker was replaced. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the six foot. At 80 years old, this rare and handsome restored radio now has many more years of reliable service if properly cared for. It is a must for the collector of 1930′s radios and/or magic eye radios. It will provide an attractive treat for the eyes and ears wherever it is displayed. Dimensions: 16.5x10x7.5. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off. It is rare too, as very few of these in restored condition are available. And the sound from the seven inch speaker is fantastic. With bass, treble and speech control, it is a real treat to hear and see this gem. This is a high quality radio with multiple wood species veneers and inlays. The green tuning eye is bright and very attractive. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost detail. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated and nourished. The top and bottom trim were redone with dark mahogany toners, which match the original Bakelite knobs. The entire cabinet was given six coats of clear lacquer. It was then waxed to further enhance the luster of the finish. The dial face has a few scratches as can be seen, but overall looks wonderful and is nicely lit from the pilot light. The dial cover is new. The grill cloth is original and in excellent condition. The power cord has been replaced, using a period correct plug. There is one minor “bug bite” to the front, and a very small area on the left rear side that has been repaired. Both can be noted in the photos, but really don’t detract from the total package of this very desirable radio. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the external antenna. At 82 years old, this completely restored radio once again looks like new. It was quite the masterpiece in its day and will now bring many more years of enjoyment if well cared for. It is a larger radio, and will certainly be the center of attention where it is displayed. This completely restored 1939 Silvertone is quite rare and an absolute beauty! The burled wood and other veneers are a fantastic combination that the photos depict and are just as stunning in person. Everything on this radio is in excellent condition. With a new green magic tuning eye, original push buttons, and lacquered original wooden knobs, the combination is wonderful and will be the prize of someone’s collection. It sounds great too, with good reception and selectivity using an external 6 foot antenna wire and a six inch speaker. It also has a hi/low sound for your listening preference. The SW receives well, too, but will require a longer antenna for best reception. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost detail. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated to nourish and enrich the wood. The bottom and top trim were redone with dark mahogany toners for a very appealing and balanced appearance. The entire cabinet was then given six coats of quality clear gloss lacquer. Finally, it was finished off with a beeswax/orange oil polish. The dial face has crisp and clear graphics that are nicely back lit. The dial cover is original and was polished. The green tuning eye is new and very bright. The wooden knobs are original and have also been refinished and lacquered. The Bakelite push buttons are original and functional. The grill cloth behind the wooden grill is original. The power cord has been replaced and the plug is an original and polished. There are no dings, scrapes or damage to the cabinet. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the external antenna. This rare and delightful masterpiece is very desirable to collectors and those with a discerning eye for the beauty of this state of the art for the times radio. And, now that it is restored, this 80 year old will continue to provide many more years of enjoyment. This stunning Silvertone radio has every bit of the style and panache as the famed Ingraham cabinets if not more! Note the beautiful veneers and inlays contrasting, yet accenting one another. Along with the sensuous curved front. Then add in the soft green glow of the magic tuning eye, and t. He result is delightful and very eye catching. It sounds great too, powered by six tubes and using a six foot antenna lead. The radio is also equipped with hi/low tone control for your listening preference. The push buttons all function as designed and you can set them to your local stations. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated to return it to the original appearance. The bottom and top trim were redone with dark walnut toners. The entire cabinet was given six coats of clear lacquer, then hand waxed to further bring out the beauty of the wood grains. The dial face has crisp and clear graphics and is nicely lit from the pilot light. The wooden knobs and bakelite push buttons are original and in excellent condition. The dial cover, grill cloth and power cord are new replacements. There are a few flaws as can be seen in the photos: Upper and lower right front and the upper right side have veneer cracks that have been stabilized. They detract very minimally from the overall appearance of the radio. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the included antenna wire lead. Built before the start of WWII, this 80 year old radio is now totally restored and ready to bring many more years of enjoyment if well maintained. It is highly collectible and will draw attention and admiration wherever it is displayed and used. It would be wonderful to listen to your favorite radio shows in a darkened room while enjoying the rich sound and soft glow of the lights of this classic. The end of the Great Depression heralded new and bold radio designs, and this one sure fits the bill. It has beautiful inlaid veneers for a rich, warm look. It has been restored inside and out for many more years of enjoyment. And finally, it has an “RCA” input to play modern devices. That input was originally touted for a phonograph or the very new and rare modern device – television! Note the label for it on the back of the chassis. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated, nourished and toners added to replicate the original appearance. The trim was redone with dark walnut toners. The entire cabinet was then given six coats of clear lacquer, and finally waxed to further bring out the wonderful wood finishes. The dial graphics are crisp and clear, being well back-lit from the pilot light. The green magic eye shows brightly from behind as well. The knobs and glass dial cover are original, with one knob slightly different than the others. The speaker grill cloth and power cord are new, using the original plug. Overall, the cabinet is in excellent condition. There is one small blemish at the bottom right as can be seen in the photos. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using a five foot wire lead antenna (included). At 80 years old, this radio still looks fantastic and sounds really nice too. And the magic eye in the background makes it subtle and inviting, creating a warm. I believe that this set is a great candidate for a full restoration. The radio is approximately 20″ W by 9 1/2″ D by 12 1/4 H. When I plugged the radio in and turned it on, the backlit dial lit up as it should but I did not hear any hum or static. The tuning dial needs some work so I could not try to tune any stations in. This radio features one of the awesome Silvertone “magic eye” tuning tubes! I love the look and feel of these. The wood cabinet is nice and solid and the finish looks pretty good. There is quite a bit of veneer damage on the scroll piece at the bottom front of the radio. The pushbuttons will depress but they don’t pop out very well. As you can see from the pictures, the chassis looks clean but the radio has been in storage for many years so I’m sure that it could use a good/thorough cleaning.
