Reproduction Knight Broadcaster kit. This listing has multiple photos, scroll down to see them all. Kit does not include vacuum tubes, see text below. Our Knight Broadcaster kit is back for a third time, after two sell outs! We have a limited amount of vintage parts to make kits, this run started out less then ten. We also sell locally to individuals, hamfests, etc. So quantity listed will be adjusted accordingly. We have obtained more vintage parts with the exception of phenolic RCA jacks. The kit now uses metal PC mount jacks. With dummy mounting screws, these give the same visually appearance as the original jacks. A revision has also been done to the kit, incorporating the improvements below. Side panels are now fabricated from the same high quality fiberglass PC board material, as the top, front and back panels. These are more rigid parts, and a better color match to the other panels. Pre-drilled side and bottom plates, no hole drilling necessary. Improved rear panel AC layout and easier wiring. Kit now includes a BONUS audio input board! The Knight Broadcaster was meant to be used with low level microphone inputs. High level signals will distort the output, unless the input is attenuated. To ease this problem, as well as improve connectivity to audio sources, we have designed an accessory input control board. The kit includes a small 2-3/8 x 2-3/8 PC board (same blue color), to allow easy connection of bare wire, RCA, or 3.5mm jack inputs! The board also features a potentiometer level control, AND isolation transformer, if you experience hum problems. See new photos near the end of the listing. This is a reproduction kit of the Knight Broadcaster – Amplifier. The kit also functions as an audio PA (Public Address) style amplifier, and has connections you can hook up a loudspeaker too. The kit is electrical equivalent to the original, with several minor changes. Our design includes a brand new, high quality, Triad isolation transformer. Appropriate changes has been made for mounting the transformer on the back, and for internal wiring. We have replaced the selenium rectifier with a modern diode. The kit comes with a prewound oscillator coil. As shown in the internal wiring photo, modern filter capacitors, smaller rectifier diode and oscillator coil, give easier and increased assembly and working room! To keeps costs as low as possible, the kit does NOT come with tubes. The circuit uses common tubes you may already have. The remaining tube is a 12AX7, probably the most common preamplifier tube in the world. We have gone to great effort, time and expense to acquire vintage style components , like those used in the original design. As shown in the parts photos, the kit currently uses vintage parts, including carbon composition resistors (may be vintage or modern manufacture), phenolic wafer tube sockets, vintage terminal strips, and a vintage compression tuner capacitor. As time progresses on, these parts become harder and harder to find, and at some point may be replaced with modern equivalents. Until otherwise noted, the kit will come with the vintage parts just mentioned. The prototype in the photos used a couple carbon film resistors, but kits will come with ALL carbon composition resistors. The kit now uses black oxide screws to assemble the panels, instead of the costly blue screws shown in the photos. NOTE: This kit requires good electrical and mechanical building skills, and is recommended for advanced builders. Some mechanical modifications are required, such as cutting the metal potentiometer shaft to the correct length, enlarging the tube sockets holes, etc.. Being an early generation kit, some simple modification to parts is also necessary, such as modifying a couple of the plastic panel assembly brackets. The kit is constructed with individual fiberglass panels for the top, front, back and sides. These are fiberglass printed circuit boards, with high durability lettering. The bottom panel is an acrylic or similar plastic material, it’s color may vary or be clear. The parts are connected by plastic brackets and screws, as you can see in the internal view photo. The original manual and addendum assembly notes are supplied as JPG and RTF files on a CD-R respectively. Note we do not supply copies of manuals. The kit is only for sale people with experience building and operated line powered devices. The kit must be operated under FCC Part 15 regulations at all times. This unit must only be operated with the supplied line isolation transformer. Not for sale to, or use by minors. It is assumed that the unit(s) will be installed and operated by qualified personnel. See our other listings for more Radio, Electronic and other RARE and UNIQUE items. NOTE : The flat and reflective surfaces cause some reflections in the photos. Vertical’lines’ on the front panel are reflections from the corrugated cardboard the unit was photographed on. With fiberglass panels and stainless steel hardware, your kit will look good for many years! Kit now features black oxide panel connecting screws, not blue screws shown in photos. Modern filter capacitors, rectifier diode and smaller coil, give increased working room. Kit now uses PC mount RCA jacks, see text. Brand new in box isolation transformer. CD-R with original manual scans. Accessory input control board now included with kit. Board can easily mount to panels if desired, see above and below photos. See our other listings, for our much lower cost, miniature tube transmitter. Offered here is an Allied Radio Corporation’s Knight Deluxe 40 watt integrated tube amplifier. This amp was built in the early 60′s by my late uncle who was an EEngineer at Northern Electric. The amplifier is in “Showroom condition”. It was always housed in a cabinet. No scrapes, scars, dents or scratches anywhere to be found. A collectors piece you can be proud of. Sporting 5 inputs: Aux, Tuner, Tape, phono, & phono magnetic. Complete with owners manual, schematic & full size circuit pictorials. This amplifier employs a pair of 6973 output tubes/channel for a conservative 20 watts/channel. NOTE: The 6973 pentode is no longer being manufactured and nos examples are becoming difficult to find, [matched pairs in particular]. Those privy to the sound of the 6973 will surely attest to their magic. My uncle collected vintage tube amplfiers and this one was his favourite amplifier to drive a pair Tannoy corner horns. The amplifier is operational but one of the 6973 output tubes in the right channel tested weak [40% emission] & will require another tube, “preferably a matched pair” to meet factory spec. Please read the technicians report card below. All tubes, resistors, & capacitors in the circuit were tested. The Selenium bridge rectifier was replaced with a new diode. 5 uf cap [c-42] in the tone control section replaced with a mylar film cap. 1uf cap [C-20] in the left channel replaced with a mylar film cap. Resistors: All tested within factory spec. The amplifier employs 11 tubes. 2-12ax7′s in the preamp section. 2- 6cm8 [tone controls]. 2-12ax7 phase inverters-driver tubes. 4- 6973 output tubes, one push/pull pair per channel. All tube tested for emission on a calibrated B&K for emmision [life test]. [1] original stock GZ34/5ar4 full wave rectifier. [2] Both original 12ax7′s in the preamp section 90%. [3] one of the 12ax7′s [phase inverter] in the driver stage tested weak [65%]. Replaced both 12ax7′s in the driver stage with a matched pair of new production Tungsol 12ax7′s. [4] one original 6cm8 in the tone control circuit tested weak [60%]. Replaced with a strong testing old stock GE 6cm8 [98%]. [5] three of the four 6973 output tubes tested better than 85%, the fourth one failed [40%]. Note: I haven’t been able to locate a matched pair of 6973′s. The amplifier is operational but. One of the 6973 output tubes is bad & needs to be replaced, a matched pair will be required to bias to spec. The stock tubes alone are worth the price of admission. Clean overall & faceplate excellent. Working condition tube stereo amplifier from around 1962-63? Complete with all tubes- 1 EZ81, 2 12AX7, 4 6BM8. Small size but packs a punch- quite nice sounding little amp. One channel a bit louder than the other- may be a stronger tube on one side? Bass & treble dont seem to do much- dont know why. Also Some rust on bottom. Power supply rebuilt with new caps & resistors. Any questions, just ask and Thanks for looking!
