Fifty six years ago, this. Dumont Sound Stage “high fidelity” table radio was considered High End owing to the exceptional sound produced for it’s listeners. It was manufactured by the Dumont Division of Emerson Radio, Inc located at 14th and Coles Streets in Jersey City, N. You may want to Google Allen B. Dumont for more particulars. Like you, I never actually knew what “high fidelity” really meant other than it being something desirable. So, what does high fidelity mean anyway? Why should I care if this DuMont radio is a high fidelity set? I’ll try to explain high fidelity this way: If you took a 15 foot length of rope and tied one end to a door knob and stood 12 feet away from that door and snapped the other end of the rope up and down, you would be sending a ripple in the form of a wave towards the door knob. If you counted the number of up and down ripples you introduced to the rope you would find you created about 10 complete ripples in the one second it took for you to jerk the rope to make the ripples. (That would be equal to 10 cycles per second). It just so happens that sounds travel through the air in waves just like the rope ripples. When the big bass drum in a parade is struck, it’s skin vibrates in and out. (Maybe 10 times per second). In other words, the drum skin goes through 10 complete back and forth movements in one second’s time. Each of these Back-And-Forth movements is called a cycle. Again, sounds travel through the air in waves. In this example, when struck, the bass drum is transmitting a sound having a frequency of 10 cycles per second. If a radio was playing the sound of the bass drum in our example, the speaker inside the radio would be vibrating in and out at a frequency of 10 cycles per second. Humans can hear sounds that travel from 20 cycles per second to 20,000 cycles per second. Radio was designed to reproduce all the sounds an orchestra or band could make and all the sounds a human could hear. Therefore, the listening experience is closer to actually being present to hear the music live. Only delivers up to about 3,000 cycles per second, a lot of the original musical notes are never reproduced for you to hear. By the way, human voices go up to about 3,000 cycles/second. On the other hand. Has the capability to transmit the full spectrum of sound (20-20,000 cycles/second), but you need a radio that can reproduce what’s being transmitted. That’s where a good “high fidelity” radio comes in. That’s why you should consider owning this particular DuMont radio set; it’s “high fidelity”; not to mention “the high quality engineering built in”. In addition, tube radio circuits have a different frequency response than transistorized radio circuits. That means, certain notes are more pronounced while other notes are less accentuated as compared to a live performance. The opposite would be true for transistorized radio equipment. Both are very good, but our perception is that they sound different. Just talk to anyone about tube guitar amplifiers! The DuMont radio set you are viewing has been totally restored to it’s original condition and is ready to bring another lifetime’s listening pleasure; especially on FM where it plays in “high fidelity”. You will be satisfied with this radio set because no detail inside OR outside has been overlooked in order to deliver both “dependable performance” and appealing cabinetry. Every effort has been made to offer a practically new radio, performing as it did originally, and to be maintenance free for quite some time. The sturdy wood cabinet has been refinished in traditional manner using linseed oil varnish to bring out the texture of the wood and to impart a soft shine. The entire radio was dismantled in order to clean out 56 years of dust & grime from chassis, cabinet, and station dial components using very labor intensive methods. The cabinet, measuring 16.5″ x 6.5″ x 10.5high, is now in excellent condition. The 4″x6″ mid-range Speaker & High Pitch tweeter combination delivers the full fidelity of the DuMont circuit design. A thorough clean job. Check out all the photos. The electronics inside the chassis are in superb working condition after a thorough overhaul which included replacing the entire power supply circuit and all filter capacitors. The dial string is new. The AC power cord is new. This radio uses 7 tubes. All seven tubes are “new old stock”. There is an RCA connector in the rear for attaching an old style amplifier-less phonograph. Thoroughly bench tested, this vintage DuMont radio set is ready for it’s new home. So, if you’re seeking both dependability as well as exceptional “FM high fidelity” in a restored tube radio set, you’ve come to the right place. I will double box using new cartons so that your new radio arrives undamaged in transit.. This radio features “Loudness” (+power) and “Bass/Treble” knobs, both in fully functioning condition. The tuning and band dial works, however the tuning marker does not move along with the channel changing. This radio powers on just fine and I was able to find a couple different stations. In addition to the tuning marker, this radio may be in need of more maintenance. I have not found any further mechanical damage though. The 54 two-pronged power cord is in great shape. This is a model C845M with unit number printed on the bottom reading “666″. It measures 15.5″x9.5″x7.75. Please see all photos for condition. The radio does power on as it should and both backlit dials work nicely. When I switched to the FM dial, I could only hear static. The radio may need some minor adjustment or, perhaps, one of the antenna connections has come loose? This is a really interesting radio. All of the various dials and switches seem to be working as they should be. The wood cabinet is nice and solid and the finish looks nice. There is, what looks like, a little bit of blue paint on the top of the radio. I have not tried to remove it. All of the original knobs are present. As you can see from the. Pictures, the chassis looks clean, but the radio has been in storage for many years, so I’m sure that it could use a good/thorough cleaning. Please be sure to preview all of the pictures so that you can determine the condition for yourself. This set would look very nice in any vintage themed room or in your collection! 35W4(1), 12BE6(1), 12BA6(1), 12AT6/12AV6(1), 50CS(1). Power output tubes are first mounted in test fixtures and burned in for 24 hours. This burn-in helps stabilize the internal operating parameters of the tubes before measurements begin. Each power tube is then tested and graded for technical characteristics specified by platinum tubes engineers. Tubes not meeting these criteria are rejected to the supplier or disposed of. Average tube life will depend on several parameters: product type, how the product is installed, loudspeaker efficiency, room size and acoustic damping, listening habits or average sound pressure levels, A. Line stability and purity, and other circumstances. Generally, preamplifier tubes last up to 5,000 hours, while power amplifier output tubes will last up to 3,000 hours. Near the end of their useful sonic life, aging vacuum tubes may degrade the sonic character of the product(s) they are used in. The sound may become somewhat dry and lifeless, with a noticeable decrease in harmonic richness or bloom. Bass response may be diminished, and musical dynamics may flatten out or compress. Toward the very end of their service life, tubes may become noisy, noticeable as a slight rushing sound or rustling noise. It is far better to replace vacuum tubes prior to the end of their service life, before severe sonic degradation or outright failure occurs. Running vacuum tubes into failure may damage to other internal components and cause needless repair expense. Factors which can shorten tube life include inadequate ventilation, overdriving loudspeakers at continuously high volume levels, severely fluctuating A. Sagging line voltage during summer peaks of air-conditioning demand, or severe interference pulses or electromagnetic interference. This is for a beautiful 1950s era Zenith B-835R wooden mahogany tube radio. Considered by many to be the best sounding american radio from the mid century era. Its definitely the clearest and loudest table radio I’ve ever heard. And my research indicated that this radio is particularly an easy one to do a modification to make it able to play an ipod. I looked at a youtube video (there’s a bunch of them) on how to do it and it seemed to me that a person with some basic knowledge could do it pretty easily and cheap. Only a few dollars worth of parts. The gentleman I got this from told me he had a radio guy go over this unit about 15 years ago. One of the pics of the side makes it look like the finish is faded on the bottom 2 inches but its just the lighting. There’s no fading there. It also looks like there is some white specks in the pic of the other side view but I can’t see them in real life. I will be listing a TON of vintage electronics in the next few weeks. Measures 15 1/2 x 10 high x 8 deep and weighs about 14lbs. Thats a proven track record of integrity and honesty. 12+ years of packing it right so it will get to you undamaged. I sell mostly used vintage items and they may have wear and I may not be an expert on them so please look at the pictures carefully and ask questions. Items may have come from a home where somebody smoked. Local pick-up is always accepted and even encouraged.
