Vintage 1930s Fairbanks Morse tombstone tube radio. Measures 16″ tall, 12-3/4″ across, and 9-3/4 deep. Original condition as found from a local estate. No breaks or repairs. I don’t know if this would have had a glass cover over the round dial area originally or not (most old radios I see do) but this one does not. Thanks for looking, Mike. It was part of an ENORMOUS radio collection. The AC power cord is old & brittle so I did not attempt to power the radio on. The walnut wood cabinet is nice and solid and the original finish looks beautiful. There are some minor imperfections like you might expect on a piece from this era. The tuning dial seems to be working as it should. I believe that this is 100% original. As you can see from the pictures, the chassis looks clean but the radio has been in storage for many years so I’m sure that it could use a good/thorough cleaning. I do not have the proper equipment to test this piece any further. Please be sure to preview all of the pictures so that you can determine the condition for yourself. Fairbanks Morse was a manufacturing company based in Indiana in the late 19. The company also spent a brief time manufacturing high end radios with elegant cabinet designs. Manufacturing of radios was very small compared to their other products which is why they are highly sought after today, and very difficult to find. Here we offer one of their finest models. The American Walnut cabinet is just beautiful. Gorgeous wood grain flows throughout the entire set. A swirling burl grain graces the front of the cabinet and really catches your eye. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. It all comes together magnificently when powered up and the bright back lit dial comes to life shining an array of different colors. Quite an impressive sight! Jet black feet and dark walnut tones add the perfect contrast to finish the cabinet off with elegance and style. Youll be the envy of all with this masterpiece proudly displayed in any room of your home or office. The large back lit dial is quite the attention getter. It features an array of colors from black and yellow to red and green. The dial is illuminated by two dial lamps and features three band scales. When listening to the other bands, the dial lights up in accordance to which scale you currently have tuned in. A very neat feature for the time! The dial pointer also features a precision pointer for super fine precise tuning! All four knobs are perfect and control on/off & volume, high/low tone control, tuning, and band switch. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a. Gold color with a herringbone design. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. During the restoration process on this radio several veneer chips and cracks were repaired. All have been secured, filled, blended and only visible close up and under extreme lighting. As you can see, nothing that detracts from the beauty of the set and it displays wonderfully. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine.
