Fifty six years ago, this. Dumont Sound Stage “high fidelity” table radio was considered High End owing to the exceptional sound produced for it’s listeners. It was manufactured by the Dumont Division of Emerson Radio, Inc located at 14th and Coles Streets in Jersey City, N. You may want to Google Allen B. Dumont for more particulars. Like you, I never actually knew what “high fidelity” really meant other than it being something desirable. So, what does high fidelity mean anyway? Why should I care if this DuMont radio is a high fidelity set? I’ll try to explain high fidelity this way: If you took a 15 foot length of rope and tied one end to a door knob and stood 12 feet away from that door and snapped the other end of the rope up and down, you would be sending a ripple in the form of a wave towards the door knob. If you counted the number of up and down ripples you introduced to the rope you would find you created about 10 complete ripples in the one second it took for you to jerk the rope to make the ripples. (That would be equal to 10 cycles per second). It just so happens that sounds travel through the air in waves just like the rope ripples. When the big bass drum in a parade is struck, it’s skin vibrates in and out. (Maybe 10 times per second). In other words, the drum skin goes through 10 complete back and forth movements in one second’s time. Each of these Back-And-Forth movements is called a cycle. Again, sounds travel through the air in waves. In this example, when struck, the bass drum is transmitting a sound having a frequency of 10 cycles per second. If a radio was playing the sound of the bass drum in our example, the speaker inside the radio would be vibrating in and out at a frequency of 10 cycles per second. Humans can hear sounds that travel from 20 cycles per second to 20,000 cycles per second. Radio was designed to reproduce all the sounds an orchestra or band could make and all the sounds a human could hear. Therefore, the listening experience is closer to actually being present to hear the music live. Only delivers up to about 3,000 cycles per second, a lot of the original musical notes are never reproduced for you to hear. By the way, human voices go up to about 3,000 cycles/second. On the other hand. Has the capability to transmit the full spectrum of sound (20-20,000 cycles/second), but you need a radio that can reproduce what’s being transmitted. That’s where a good “high fidelity” radio comes in. That’s why you should consider owning this particular DuMont radio set; it’s “high fidelity”; not to mention “the high quality engineering built in”. In addition, tube radio circuits have a different frequency response than transistorized radio circuits. That means, certain notes are more pronounced while other notes are less accentuated as compared to a live performance. The opposite would be true for transistorized radio equipment. Both are very good, but our perception is that they sound different. Just talk to anyone about tube guitar amplifiers! The DuMont radio set you are viewing has been totally restored to it’s original condition and is ready to bring another lifetime’s listening pleasure; especially on FM where it plays in “high fidelity”. You will be satisfied with this radio set because no detail inside OR outside has been overlooked in order to deliver both “dependable performance” and appealing cabinetry. Every effort has been made to offer a practically new radio, performing as it did originally, and to be maintenance free for quite some time. The sturdy wood cabinet has been refinished in traditional manner using linseed oil varnish to bring out the texture of the wood and to impart a soft shine. The entire radio was dismantled in order to clean out 56 years of dust & grime from chassis, cabinet, and station dial components using very labor intensive methods. The cabinet, measuring 16.5″ x 6.5″ x 10.5high, is now in excellent condition. The 4″x6″ mid-range Speaker & High Pitch tweeter combination delivers the full fidelity of the DuMont circuit design. A thorough clean job. Check out all the photos. The electronics inside the chassis are in superb working condition after a thorough overhaul which included replacing the entire power supply circuit and all filter capacitors. The dial string is new. The AC power cord is new. This radio uses 7 tubes. All seven tubes are “new old stock”. There is an RCA connector in the rear for attaching an old style amplifier-less phonograph. Thoroughly bench tested, this vintage DuMont radio set is ready for it’s new home. So, if you’re seeking both dependability as well as exceptional “FM high fidelity” in a restored tube radio set, you’ve come to the right place. I will double box using new cartons so that your new radio arrives undamaged in transit..
