Back in the pre World War II era, everybody wanted to be associated with that ultra-cutting edge technological craze called “Radio”, including companies as diverse as The Firestone Tire Corporation. In response, this beautiful, Machine-age styled 1939 Firestone Air Chief Model S-7426-8 was reputedly manufactured by Stewart-Warner for Firestone to put their name on and capture some of that technological glory. To resurrect that glory, it has been electronically and cosmetically restored by Doctorvoltz of Merrick, NY, a longtime vintage electronics collector and restorer and is all set for you to proudly display and play. Then, the radio was aligned by signal generator so that it plays accurately with plenty of selectivity and volume. In addition, all questionable wiring has been replaced, as has the ac line cord, and an internal inline fuse has been. Added to the chassis for safety. This radio also features pushbutton preset tuning as well as standard dial tuning and includes an internal loopstick antenna. You also have the option of attaching a long-wire antenna for more sensitive reception. , it has a small, unobtrusive modification to the radio so that you can play your iPod, MP3 player, or portable CD player through it simply by plugging the supplied cable into the headphone jack of your device and the other end into the labeled jack at the back of the radio. Cosmetically, the radio has had a complete deep-cleaning of the original two-tone walnut finish, some minor stain touchups and the application of multiple, hand-buffed paste wax coats. Though the radio has some minor blemishes and is not as flawless and sterile-looking as a newly refinished set, it retains the look and patina of a very well cared for original. Please take note of the ultra-cool knobs with their Phoenix-inspired theme. Please note, this is an open-backed radio, as were many wood, table radios from this era. So thanks for looking and. Please remember, although this radio has been restored to its original specs, it is still a vintage radio that employs vintage technology. At the time it was manufactured it was not subject to the tremendous amount of RF interference that is generated today from computers, flat screen TVs, high-speed cable modems, light dimmers, etc. Careful placement of the radio is essential to minimize audio interference. IF you are looking for a bargain, and enjoy the pleasure that is derived from doing your own restoration at your pace, please check out these most affordable radios. You can listen to Spotify, IHeart, Pandora, Sirius XM, and many FM radio stations through this old vintage radio. It was part of an ENORMOUS radio collection. The radio does power on when plugged in and turned on and it plays nicely! I was able to tune in several stations here in central Indiana. It was not hooked up to an external antenna. The wood cabinet is nice and solid and the finish looks nice. There are some minor imperfections like you might expect on a piece from this era. The tuning dial works well and the on/off/volume switch functions as it should. I believe that this is 100% original. As you can see from the pictures, the chassis looks clean but the radio has been in storage for many years so I’m sure that it could use a good/thorough cleaning. I do not have the proper equipment to test this piece any further. Please be sure to preview all of the pictures so that you can determine the condition for yourself. The cabinet is very unique with fluted side panels and art deco style front corner columns. The wood and veneers are in excellent condition and it has a beautiful burled wood top. With a large speaker and tone control, the warm, rich sounds are a real delight. Also having push buttons that are easily adjusted for your local stations, this just-post WWII radio was cutting edge technology for its day. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was cleaned and rejuvenated. The columns and trim were redone with brown mahogany toners. The entire cabinet was then given six coats of clear lacquer and the results are just stunning. The slide rule dial face has crisp, clean graphics and is nicely back lit using two bulbs. The grill cloth is original and was cleaned. One of the knobs is slightly different than the other three, which are originals. The chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper and electrolytic capacitors replaced. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. There is an external antenna lead for short wave. This beautiful radio is a real head turner and then hearing it will really make you realize what a great combination of sight and sound it is. This 72 year old radio, since restored has at least that many more years of life ahead of it. Your children will someday pass it along to your grandchildren and even great grandchildren. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. With the included copper line antenna the radio performs very well. The Cabinet’s Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 13 1/4″W x 9 1/2″H x 7 3/4D.
