Vintage FADA Model 652 Temple Catalin Radio Butterscotch Bakelite Aftermkt Knobs
vintage
Comments Off
Vintage FADA Model 652 Temple Catalin Radio in Butterscotch with original stamped back panel stating model number and information. From what I can tell, this radio is in excellent condition for it’s age, less notable flaws. Knobs appear to be replacements, they do not match photos of the original knobs for this unit but they are vintage. Small tight hairline crack on one side of case near bottom, closeups pictured. Dark spot on top, not sure if this is part of the character or a blemish. Power cord has been updated/replaced. Potential tiny scratches that I didn’t notice – please examine photos to make your own judgement! AT YOUR REQUEST: I’m willing to disassemble the case from the electronic component for packaging (my disassembly is at your risk upon request- I’m not an expert).

This one is in very nice vintage condition and has no cracks in the plastic that I can see. Please look at all pictures for condition and coloring as each one of these radios has individual characteristics and shading and coloring from age- this should clean up nicely if your wish is to restore the Catalin and know how to polish it- or keep its natural patina. The tuner window glass is not chipped or broken. All internals seem intact and as they should be but this radio has not been power tested due to the condition of the cord- it is brittle and has bare wire showing. The tuner cord is intact and works smoothly and moves the pointer across the glass. While the tuner knob turns smoothly- the on/off/volume knob is stiff/stuck and I did not want to force it to turn so. And cleaning will be. Necessary to make this a working unit. The cardboard back has a model # of 562 on it in faded print so this was either a mistake or substitution from the factory due to supply issues after war OR this radio was missing its cardboard back at some point in its life and someone put a model 562 one of it (they are the same shape and size and are interchangeable)- this is of course a model 659 because of the extra shortwave tuner in it. Please note that it is possible that the internal guts may have been replaced at some point with the model 562 radio and there is no shortwave tuner- I do not know or have any experience with the difference so please look closely at all pictures. Either way- the case is in very nice condition and the glass and tuner scale especially is super rare to find. These are the only two obvious issues with this radio that I could find, other than the cord. Information as found in the internet about his radio. Number of Tubes- 6. Main principle- Superhet with RF-stage; ZF/IF 456 kHz; 2 AF stage(s). Wave bands–Broadcast only (MW). Power type and voltage–AC/DC-set. Loudspeaker–Permanent or electro-dynamic (moving coil), system not known yet. Material–Catalin (a brand name for a thermosetting polymer popular in the 1930s and 1940s – a phenol formaldehyde resin – like Bakelite, but a two-stage process with a lot of work afterwards). Model: 659 – Fada Radio & Electric Co. Shape–Tablemodel, with any shape – general. Dimensions (WHD)–11 x 6.75 x 6.25 inch / 279 x 171 x 159 mm. Short wave version of Model 652. 528 to 1640 for broadcast and 5.7 to 18.3 mc for international short wave. Net weight (2.2 lb = 1 kg). 6 lb 0 oz (6 lb) / 2.724 kg.

Vintage tube Radio Emerson 540 rare Red Plaskon not Catalin not Painted Working

Vintage tube Radio Emerson 540 rare Red Plaskon not Catalin not Painted Working. This is a rare Emerson 540 from 1947 this was called the midget Emersonette. This radio came in four colors Ivory brown Bakelite green and red, the red and green radios are harder to find and these cases were very fragile made with Plaskon plastic as a result few have survived, nearly impossible to find without cracks or chips. This radio is not painted and is a original red Emerson 540. The radio does have hairline cracks on the bottom please see photos there are 2 hairlines in each corner coming from the screw area and two other hairline cracks I thought or scratches until I took the chassis out and inspected. There are no visible cracks or hairlines on the top-or front or sides making it a perfect displayable radio. The radio has been electronically restored and works great I was able to tune in many stations without harm or static, speaker has no cracks and vertical tuning scale slides well up and down the scale, looks like the original grill cloth has been replaced it does have the original knobs and original white paint from the Emerson logo is still there and visible Electrical cord has been replaced. Well double box this fragile radio very carefully.

Vintage Emerson Model 520 Catalin Radio Great Looking Working

Vintage Emerson Model 520 catalin radio that is great looking! The catalin body has great swirling all around and has been polished up lightly with Novus, which is made for polishing plastic and catalin. In the light the brown, light brown and hint of green in the catalin shows very well – this radio has exceptional coloring. The body has no chips or cracks and minimal scratches that are difficult to detect. In respect to its functionality, the radio is working – receiving stations readily, but with some background hum. The knobs turn smoothly and properly and the dial indicator functions properly as well. The power cord is in excellent condition. The dial cover is a bit loose and will need to be affixed better. Great catalin radio for the beginner or for someone who does not want to pay in the high end range. Do not hesitate to make an offer, all will be considered.

Bottom of the radio has repaired crack as seen on the photos, this crack is fixed solid. Left front hole for volume knob is quite larger in diameter than right, however. It is not quite seen in real life since it is covered by knob and felts washer, as seen on photos. Radio electronically restored, recapped. Radio has a new tube radio original speaker with no rips or holes installed. This unit has new tuning thread installed and adjusted. The dial cover is also new. A power cord is cloth covered of green color to match the body. A rear back of this radio is new. Radio frequency for stations is quite correct. Volume is good and reception is strong. Even though the radio electronically restored it may stop working. Or performing well any time just from standing on a shelf. So we sell this radio of any obligation to work well or not to work now. At all in any moment in future. This radio for decoration, collection or demo. Color of the radio is Yellowish Green, not St Patrick like Green. It is reasonable green for 82 years old radio.
