1937 Zenith “Long Distance” Model 5S218 “Cube” radio. This radio is commonly known as the “cube” because of the shape of its wooden case. It is one of the round “Zenith Black Dial” radios. It is a highly sought after radio because of its unique design and good receiver sensitivity. The pointer is brass and has the distinctive “Z” in the center. All knobs are wood and have the “lightning bolt Z” carved into them. The knob on the lower left is the on/off volume control. The center knob is tuning. The right-hand knob is the bandswitch and tone control. This switch has 4 positions. The next position clockwise is shortwave with no treble cut. The last position is shortwave with treble cut. This radio is in amazing restored condition as you can see from the photos. I live out in the county and that may be the issue. I believe the dial is a replacement. I do not know much about radio operations, so please ask me any questions that you may have. It would be difficult to improve on this fine example. The radio chassis is copper coated. Dimensions: 12″ x 10.4″ x 9. Please review the photo’s of the Radio as the photo’s take precedence over any written description. This would make an excellent addition to any antique or Zenith Radio collection. I will be listing many items from my antique radio collection in the coming days, so check out my other listings! I can take addition. The item “Vintage 1937 Cube Zenith Radio Model 5S218 Professionally Restored Black Dial” is in sale since Wednesday, December 02, 2015. All four original wood Z knobs are perfect and work as follows: tone, on/off & volume, tuning, and band switch. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring an antique. Gold color with a wave design very similar to what was originally used in Zenith tombstones from this era including the famous Walton. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. Due to bad SW coils the shortwave bands have been eliminated but we added a mini jack auxiliary input so you can also listen to your own playlist of music, or any of your favorite stations, by plugging in any of your modern devices (smart phones, iPad, CD players, etc) to the mini jack auxiliary input. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 13 1/4W x 18 1/2H x 9 1/4D. VINTAGE ZENITH 5S29 TOMBSTONE BLACK DIAL WOOD ANTIQUE TUBE RADIO 1936 DECO
vintage

HERE IS A VERY DECENT 1936 ZENITH 5S29 TOMBSTONE RADIO… THE RADIO IS VERY NICE LOOKING, AND THE CABINET WAS RE-DONE WITH A SPRAY LACQUER FINISH. HOWEVER, THERE ARE VENNER CHIPS AND A LITTLE WAVINESS IN THE TOP THAT A PERFECTIONIST WOULD WANT TO CORRECT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT LACQUER IS EASILY REMOVED FOR THAT REPAIR… BUT I THINK THE SET LOOKS QUITE NICE AS IS, AND YOU MAY FEEL THE SAME WAY… I DO NOT EXPECT IT TO SELL AS A PERFECT ONE WOULD, BUT THE PICTURES SHOW THIS TO BE QUITE NICE. THE LAST PHOTOS WERE TAKEN INDOORS WITH A FLASH, FOR CONTRAST. THE CHASSIS IS VERY CLEAN. SOMEONE HAS AN ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITOR ATTACHED TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERIOR. PERHAPS IT WAS EASIER TO DO. THIS RADIO HAS ALL ORIGINAL WOOD KNOBS, IN GREAT SHAPE. THE DIAL IS NICE TOO. IT APPEARS TO HAVE ORIGINAL CAPS, SO I HAVE NOT PLUGGED IT IN. THE GRILL CLOTH WAS REPLACED WITH A NOS SALESMAN SAMPLE RADIO GRILL CLOTH, NOT ZENITH THOUGH, AND LOOKS QUITE GOOD IN THE SET. I WILL BUBBLE WRAP THIS RADIO CAREFULLY, AND PACK IT VERY WELL. I HAVE HAD NO COMPLAINTS ON MY PACKING JOBS. SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS INCLUDING THE SUPER RARE 1927 ZENITH SPANISH DELUXE… ZENITH COLLECTORS DREAM CABINET… ! The item “VINTAGE ZENITH 5S29 TOMBSTONE BLACK DIAL WOOD ANTIQUE TUBE RADIO 1936 DECO” is in sale since Sunday, September 27, 2015. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Radio, Phonograph, TV, Phone\Radios\Tube Radios\1930-49″. The seller is “219phoenix” and is located in Marlton, New Jersey. 12W x 10 1/2H x 8 3/4D.
