We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. We offer Quality Antique Radios. To view our other antique radio auctions, as well as antique radio grill cloth. Here we have the highly sought after 1938 Zenith model 5-S-228 Long Distance table radio. Unique for its smaller cabinet, yet large black dial, this set offers everything you come to expect from Zeniths high quality line of tombstones. The Brown Mahogany cabinet is simply stunning with its eye catching waterfall top design and beautiful wood grain that flows throughout the entire set. Jet black edges and pin stripe inlays add to the elegance and class. As if the cabinet isnt attractive enough, couple it with the large bright black dial and it is quite the sight to behold. Especially in a dimly lit room. A large Art Deco grill and jet black feet finish the cabinet off perfectly. Youll be the envy of all with this masterpiece proudly displayed in any room of your home or office. Foreign country and city names are also listed for shortwave reference. All numbers and letters representing station frequencies are legible and display beautifully with a warm orange glow. Little hairlines, located at each dial lamp side, have been filled with a matching black bonding agent to eliminate bulb shine through. The dial glass is clear and free from any chips, breaks, or cracks. All three wood Z knobs are in great shape and work as they should; on/off & volume, tuning, and band switch / tone control. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classic gold background with a wave / swirl design very similar that was used on Zenith tombstones from this era, including the famous Walton. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 10 1/4W x 15 1/2H x 9 1/2D. We offer Quality Antique Radios. To view our other antique radio auctions, as well as antique radio grill cloth. Here we have a stunning 1940 Zenith model 6-S-439 table radio. The American Walnut cabinet is simply stunning. Gorgeous wood grain flows throughout the entire set. A large wrap around grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. It all comes together magnificently with the slide rule black dial coupled with various pushbuttons, tone controls, and surrounding brass escutcheon. Black and white grooved pinstripe inlays and dark walnut tones finish the cabinet off perfectly. This beauty is sure to be the main topic of conversation no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. The brightly lit slide rule black dial is a real eye catcher. All letters and numbers indicating station frequencies are legible and show little signs of wear. Foreign country names are displayed on the bottom of the dial for shortwave reference. The gold escutcheon adds an elegant touch and the dial glass is clear with no chips or breaks. This set features automatic tuning, the five pushbuttons located at the bottom of the dial, as well as bass and treble tone controls on either side. All pushbuttons are fully functional but it is recommended that you use the manual tuning knob due to the age and delicacy of the automatic tuning mechanism (if using the automatic feature, stations must be set by owner or professional for their location). Both knobs are in excellent condition and work as they should; on/off & volume, band switch, and tuning (located behind the band switch). The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classic gold. Color with a wave / swirl design. All tubes in Zenith’s 6 tube copper chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The included copper line antenna adds even stronger reception if needed. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process.
