This is a beauty of a radio that has a side mounted speaker, leaving a large dial face and clean lines to accent the push buttons and four knobs. The cabinet is in very good condition. It has had a small veneer repair to the right rear side and is barely noticeable. Otherwise, the photos show how appealingly it displays. With seven tubes, it has excellent sensitivity, selectivity and reception. With a six inch speaker, the warm and mellow tube is very pleasing. The SW (short wave) bands work best using a longer external antenna 12 ft. The push buttons are not functional. It has bass/treble tone control for your listening preference. Belmont made radios for many different companies, and this one had a decal as a “Freshman Masterpiece”. I could not find replacement decal anywhere, so it is back to being a Belmont, as the restoration process removed the original decal. S with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was stripped of the old varnish and lacquer, keeping the original stain. It was then nourished, rejuvenated and balanced. The bottom and top trim were redone with brown mahogany toner. The entire cabinet was then given eight coats of clear lacquer with excellent results and the photos speak for themselves. The dial face is in excellent condition with crisp and clear graphics that are nicely lighted. The original dial cover is in very good condition and was polished. He knobs and push buttons are original and have been polished. The grill cloth was replaced with a period correct one. The power cord was also replaced. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. He radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna and the SW external antenna. This 78 year old has a classy and pleasing presence and should be displayed in a prominent location. Just imagine all of the news of the world, music and stories this wonderful radio has broadcast. It would be a wonderful as a gift or as an addition to the collection. Ewly restored inside and out, it will continue to provide many more years of reliable enjoyment if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off. This Belmont manufactured radio is named the “Freshman Masterpiece” as seen on the brass plaque, and is indeed a rare find. The two toned mahogany veneers really make the radio a standout and it is in very good to excellent condition, especially considering its age. A skyscraper design of the tombstone radios of the era, it is a four tube “TRF” chassis, and not the more “modern” superheterodyne. It sounds great too, with good sensitivity and selectivity with the speaker in excellent condition. In spite of only four tubes, it has good reception using an external 10 ft. Of course as with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. This radio rarely comes up for sale, especially in this complete of restoration and condition. The cabinet was completely disassembled and cleaned. It was stripped of the old varnish and lacquer, keeping the original stain. It was nourished and rejuvenated, and then balanced with toners. The bottom trim was redone with dark walnut toner. The entire cabinet then received eight coats of clear lacquer with excellent results. There is surprisingly only one small ding as can barely be seen on the upper front. The sides and top are in excellent condition. The dial face is in very good condition with crisp and clear graphics that are nicely lighted. The polished dial cover is original and crystal clear. The bezel is in excellent condition. The original knobs have been polished and are in excellent condition. The grill cloth was replaced with an almost exact replica of the original and looks wonderful. The power cord has been replaced with a cloth covered wire that is modern, yet looks like the original. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. The photos speak for themselves as to how attractive this radio displays. The original six inch speaker is in excellent condition and sounds great. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the 10 foot external antenna (provided). This charming vintage radio would be very enjoyable in a darkened room listening to the music or a story of yesteryear or as background while enjoying a good book. It is a must for the collector and would make an unusual and interesting gift. Just imagine all of the news of the world, music and stories this little gem has broadcast! Now 85 years old and newly restored inside and out, it will continue to provide many more years of reliable enjoyment if well cared for.
