Belmont / Worthmore Art Deco plaskon vintage tube radio model 526

His highly desirable Belmont does power on but there is no audio. The power cord has been cut where it exits the chassis so I temporarily attached a power cord and slowly powered the chassis up to 110 volts using a variac. The dial light came on and the tubes warmed up but there was no audio. No further testing was done. The electronics are for the most part original except for the electrolytics and the power / volume switch, which were replaced a long time ago. The chassis is nice, clean and unmanaged. The plaskon cabinet is in very nice condition with several naturally occurring minor stress lines / cracks here and there. These lines are nothing terrible, the cabinet is still solid. One of the chassis mounts on the cabinet has been chipped. The volume knob does have a sizable chip on it’s side. The grill cloths apear to be original. The chassis will be removed from the cabinet and both parts will be individually boxed. The knobs and the pushbuttons will be secured in the box with the cabinet. Both of the boxes will than be placed in a large outer box. If you have any questions or need additional pictures, please ask. After doing a little research it looks like this radio was only made one year. This radio is in beautiful condition for its age. There are no cracks or chips in the Bakelite. It will be stunning polished up. I have no way to power it up and it’s going to need someone much smarter than me to get it going. I can tell you that when you move the tuning knob the indicator will move slightly both ways but it is going to need some work. However, everything is there as far as I can tell. AC Mains Small Table Radio. Belmont Radio Corp, Chicago. Length – 11.5. A particularly attractive, unusual and very well-made model recently recovered from long-term storage. His sales will both assist him in relocating to sheltered accommodation and set his mind at rest concerning the future of his much-loved radios. Ive had no luck in finding any other examples of this one online or discovering the model number – perhaps the collectors out there will be able to assist in identifying and dating it. I have learned that Belmont Catered for the higher end of the market with many lovely designs released including a range of better-known models with ornate Bakelite cases but that few examples can be found on this side of the Atlantic. Cosmetically this radio is worthy of display just as it is having emerged from many decades of storage in very clean condition. The front panel is veneered ply, the rest of the case is solid wood and there are some lovely details – the circular top grille vent, the bright metal dial surround and the dial itself with a globe motif. The back panel is a solid louvred metal part rather than the flimsy fibreboard usually found. Theres plenty of patina and signs of age and wear but perhaps it would be a shame to restore it cosmetically – the original finish still has a glossy shine and it looks very pretty sitting on a shelf or table. As you can see, a 2-pin Bakelite plug is fitted. There is one missing valve so its definitely not in working condition as-is but the chassis is clean and complete otherwise and it certainly looks as if this radio could be brought back to life by a knowledgeable hand. I hope this interesting old machine will be considered worthy of a place in another nice collection or as a charming display piece. It was certainly out of the ordinary for 1946 with WWII just having ended. This one has been restored to look like new and is a wonderful treat to the eyes and ears! With functional push buttons, six tubes and internal loop antenna, it sounds good too, with great reception and selectivity. It also has an external antenna hookup if needed for your locale. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost detail. The cabinet was disassembled, cleaned and prepped. It was then given 8 coats of gloss ivory to match the original finish. The underside is the original paint and has the informational sticker affixed. There is a small crack to the underside, which was repaired and epoxied on the inside – it is not seen at all during display and use. The gold and silver foil dial face has crisp, clear graphics and is beautifully lit. A new Belmont decal was applied. The dial cover is original in excellent condition and was polished. The knobs and push buttons are original and were polished The back cover is original. The power power cord was replaced using the original plug. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna. At 73 years old, this very collectible and charming radio looks and sounds like new. It will continue to bring many years of enjoyment if well cared for. A rare and gorgeous radio from 1947, it has the same chassis as that of the famed Belmont Bakelite “Rabbit” radio 6D111. With very nice veneers and trim, it is a smaller table radio with great sound and reception using six tubes and an internal loop antenna. The cabinet is in excellent condition and retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated to bring out out the features of the wood grain. It was then given six coats of clear lacquer and finally hand waxed to enhance it further. The dial face graphics are crisp and clear and lit just right from behind. The knobs and push buttons are original, as are the grill cloth and back cover. The dial cover and power cord are new replacements. The cabinet has no nicks, missing veneer or scratches. Pads were added to the underside to protect your furniture. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna. This very cute and snazzy wooden radio is now completely restored and reliable. Known to be very collectible too, as it is somewhat rare compared to its sister radio the “Rabbit”. And, at 72 years old, it once again looks and sounds sounds like almost new and will last for for many years to come if well maintained. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off.
