Thjs western motif radio features a gorgeous foil front of Hopalong Cassidy standing on his horse, named Topper. The horse was discovered on a ranch in 1937 and named Topper by the wife of the actor who played Hopalong Cassidy on film and television. The horse was named after the “Topper” book series by Thorne Smith. There were a total of 66 films depicting the adventures of fictional cowboy Hopalong Cassidy. Topper did not appear in the first film, which came out in 1935, but after Hopalong’s actor William Boyd bought him in 1937, he was used in subsequent films, television episodes, and even parades and other public appearances. Boyd rode Topper until his retirement in 1953. Topper died in 1961 and is buried in Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park. Radio has been electronically restored, has original knobs, it plays well, and a chromed back panel with lariat antenna. 1936 Sparton Bluebird #506 Cobalt blue mirror vintage vacuum tube art deco radio- Walter Dorwin Teague design. The celebrated Sparton “Bluebird” 566 glass mirror radio was one of a group of Sparton sets for 1936 attributed to noted industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. Of these sets was unveiled at the National Electrical & Radio Exposition held in New York’s Grand Central Palace during September of 1935, following several months of tantalizing build up in the media. Prior to the show, Sparks-Withington an- nounced that their 1936 line would consist of two lines; the regular line already introduced that June and the “sensational” Teague line, which was to be unveiled at the Sparton show exhibit on September 18th 1935. The Bluebird, with its bold and daring use of crystal glass, ebony and chrome, is today universally recog- nized as one of the true masterpieces of the 1930s Art Deco radio movement. It comprises a 14″ circular mirr- or of “midnight blue glass accented with chrome strips and circlets, concealing a cab containing the chassis. The mirror has a cut-out for the loudspeaker and dial. And the set sits upon a pair of ebony balled feet. The radio has beautiful chromed metal trim, no damage to the cobalt blue mirror; no cracks chips, nicks, dings, or scratches. Please see all the pictures and ask any questions, this is a prize collectible, one that is coveted by collectors in any condition, let alone this lovingly restored condition. Not too big and not too small, this original finish Crosley tombstone is just right! It must have been a cherished and well taken care of household extravagance for the original owners, as the condition is excellent. Considering it was made in the middle of the Great Depression, it was a valuable treat and important for bringing the news, stories and music of the day to someone’s home. Now electronically restored, it sounds very good too, with the rich and mellow tones found on quality tube radios. With five tubes and an eight foot external wire antenna (provided), it has remarkable sensitivity and selectivity. It also has a high/low tone control for your listening preference. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. It was given two coats of a high quality beeswax/orange oil polish/wax to bring out the beauty and protect the wood. There is no damage at all to the finish, and it is a wonderful and charming radio to see. It is as smooth as a baby’s bottom! The trim has been redone with dark walnut toners. The dial face has crisp and clear graphics and the glass cover is crystal clear. The original knobs were polished. It has the original grill cloth in excellent condition. The power cord has been replaced. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using an eight foot wire antenna. Find the history of Powel Crosley, who was dubbed “the Henry Ford of Radio” very interesting. At the ripe old age of 84, this. Radio is very desirable. Finding one in this good of condition is very rare. And, now that it is electronically restored it will continue to entertain for many years to come if well cared for. Dimensions: 11.5×10.25×7.5. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off. As such, it is now available once again for your consideration. It has been extremely well cared for, as it looks brand spanking new! The wood finish is flawless, with nary a scratch or mar. Completely restored electronically, it sounds fantastic with that rich tube sound buyers of these types of radios so much appreciate. With seven tubes, built in loop antenna and tone control for your listening preference, it has excellent selectivity and sensitivity. It also has a phono/Aux. There is a terminal for attaching an external antenna wire if needed in your locale. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The radio was completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. The cabinet was treated to nourish and enhance the wood. It was then given two coats of wax with a beeswax/orange oil polish to further enhance and protect the finish. The dial face has crisp and clear graphics and the dial cover is crystal clear. The knobs were polished. The grill cloth is original. The power cord has been replaced. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna. At 60 years old, this mid century radio was made close to the end of the tube radio era. It was also during a time of peace and prosperity, prior to the turbulent 1960′s. Now that is restored, it will provide many more years of reliable listening pleasure. It is doubtful that you will find another of this model radio in such excellent restored condition. It was equipped with a small electrostatic tweeter that was burned out and no longer working. It made only a minuscule difference in the sound, so it was not replaced.
