Manufactured by the Automatic Radio Manufacturing Co. Of Boston, MA, famous for the “Tom Thumb” series of radios. The “Tom Thumb” name fits perfectly, as radios made by the company are some of the smallest radios ever made. This vertical portable set is a classic example. It has a wooden case covered in imitation reptile leatherette with brown tenite trim. The chassis is a four-tuber and can be operated on AC or battery power. While this radio is not rare – it is still very difficult to find one in good condition – as the case is in good used condition, with no major cosmetic flaws. The leather handle on the top is in good condition, and the front and back latches work fine. This model has an on/off. All the knobs are original and the cord is hidden inside the door. Leather handle on top is broken. Front door needs a little prying to open. Back door does not stay closed. Overall wear but good condition. Measures 4 3/4″ x 8 1/2″ x 4 3/4. Vintage Tom Thumb Camera Radio Tubes Automatic Radio Mfg. First off this should be considered a displayable collectible, it hasnt been tested and may need work to function properly. The condition is very good, obviously not perfect but an excellent example of a rare and unusual camera/radio. Theres a handful of these available but what makes this one unique is its prior ownership. This was once part of the Grant M. Haist collection which was rather large and included a wide variety of cameras, slide and film projectors. The camera/radio measures approximately 9 x 4 x 4 and weighs about 3-1/2 pounds. The strap is in good condition and the shutter appears to function as intended. The following is from his obituary. Quite a fascinating man to say the least. Grant Haist was Senior Research Associate at the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories in Rochester, New York for 32 years before retiring in 1983. He was active in both technical matters and photographic affairs. He has 28 U. Patents, two books and many technical articles. His photographic work has appeared in National Geographic, National Wildlife, Smithsonian, Kodak Publications and numerous other publications. Fellowships from Royal Society of Great Britain, Photographic Society of America and Society for Imaging Science and Technology have honored his accomplishments. Grant began collecting cameras and photographic books in 1969 and has through the years amassed an extensive collection of Kodak cameras and equipment and Kodak Literature. German tube radio, build 1957/58. The radio has been restored. Tubes have been checked and defective replaced. Critical capacitors, defective elkos and resistors were replaced, also all engine capacitors. New bulbs, new magic eye, new power cord and plug. The chassis had been cleaned, all individual parts were cleaned, the wooden cabinet was cleaned and polished, all mechanical parts were cleaned and reoiled, all contacts were refreshed, technically checked, etc. The engine and fine tuning Automatic works perfectly! SABA Meersburg Automatic 8 tube radio model from 1957/58. It has a fantastic tube sound, very clear, warm and powerful. The 10 tubes and the original speakers are in perfect working condition. The magic eye EM34 is middle-good working. Tubes: EC92, EC92, ECH81, EF89, EM34, EBF89, EABC80, EF86, EL84, ECL80. Voltage regulator works from. It´s ready to plug in. It is possible to connect external players like mp3 and other. Original varnish (not revarnished). Certainly it has some signs of use and history. There are some little scratches here and there, but a few bigger on the top. The automatic works perfectly. The fine-tuning works perfectly, the radio set the station automatically. Principle: Superhet general, ZF/IF 460/10700 kHz. Wave Range: Long wave, medium wave, short wave and FM. Dimension: 650 x 415 x 300 mm / 25.6 x 16.3 x 11.8 inch. Net weight: 17.4 kg / 38 lb 5.2 oz.
