Smaller in size, this 1937 tombstone radio has the original finish and is just charming. The mirrored dial face really stands out, and is unique in its style and distinctive red globe. I chose not to refinish the cabinet, as it is beautiful just as is and speaks to its long life of broadcasting news of the world, music and stories. Using different veneers and wood solids, this radio creates a very warm and pleasing look. It has five tubes and has good reception using an external 10 ft. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. The original finish was given a nourishing balancing treatment and then given two coats of a high quality beeswax/orange oil polish to further bring out the beauty of the wood grains and protect the finish. There are very few dings commensurate with its long life, and the solid wood top has a small split toward the right front as. Can be seen in the photos. But, they do not detract from the allure of the radio. The glass dial face graphics/cover are crisp, complete and nicely lighted. The original knobs were polished and are in excellent condition. The grill cloth was replaced with a period correct new one. The power cord was replaced. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The original speaker is in excellent condition. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the external wire antenna. This 83 year old radio is quite collectible and will really stand out as an icon of the 1930′s. Boasting an original finish that is in very good condition, the completely restored electronics allows it to be reliably enjoyed for many more years if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good working order. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off. This 1937 gem has excellent craftsmanship and style. The cabinet is a combination of wood solids and veneers, including the Birdseye maple inlays. Since the speaker is side mounted, the full face display really stands out, especially with the unusual three dimensional stepped dial face, which is in excellent condition. The brass bezel has been polished to its original shine and is the focal point of the radio. It not only looks charming, it sounds good too. With five tubes, it has very good sensitivity, selectivity and reception. It also has tone control for your listening preference. S with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was stripped of the old varnish and lacquer, keeping the original stain. It was then nourished and rejuvenated and the bottom trim was redone with brown mahogany toner. The entire cabinet was then given seven coats of clear lacquer with excellent results. There was a small corner of veneer missing from the front left side top that has been repaired and is barely noticeable and a very small chip to the left front edge. None of those detract from the overall excellent appearance of the radio. The dial face is in excellent condition with crisp and clear graphics that are nicely lighted. The original dial cover has been polished and is in very good condition. The bezel is in excellent original polished condition. He knobs are original and have been given the same treatment as the cabinet. The grill cloths have been replaced with a beautiful design that is representative of the era. There is only one speaker. It is on the left side- the other side has none, as was the original design of the radio The power cord was replaced. Please note the original wood back cover, which is in excellent, non-refinished condition. It was cleaned and polished and still looks gorgeous after all these years. It still has Stewart Warner’s “Craft Built” metal tag, which was competing with the craftsmanship of other radios that used the well known Ingraham cabinets. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the nine foot external antenna (provided). This is a rare radio with a very appealing presence and it. Certainly demands a place of distinction. Just imagine all of the news of the world, music and stories this wonderful radio has broadcast. Now 83 years old and newly restored inside and out, it will continue to provide many more years of reliable enjoyment if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. The burl wood front is just gorgeous and really jumps out at you. Using the provided 8 foot antenna lead, it has good selectivity and sensitivity. Just imagine all of the stories, music and news of the world this old radio broadcast so many years ago! It has a few bruises, which are normal for its age, but no missing or damaged veneer and is in overall excellent condition. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet retains the original stain, which has been rejuvenated and nourished. The bottom trim was redone with dark walnut toner, which perfectly matches the original knobs. The entire cabinet was then given six coats of high quality clear lacquer to match the original finish as close as possible. It was then waxed with a quality beeswax/orange oil polish to further enhance and protect the finish. There are a few minor bruises that are often part of a radios life and can be seen in the photos. The scroll dial is in excellent condition, with crisp graphics that are nicely lit by the pilot light. The Bakelite knobs and the escutcheon were polished. The period correct grill cloth is a new replacement. The power cord was replaced. Felt pads were added to protect your furniture. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the external antenna wire. Rare to find in this great of condition, it is a must for a collector and those with a eye for the classic style and functionality that is embodied by this radio. At 84 years old, this completely restored radio will once again provide reliable service for many more years if well cared for. Veneers at right angles to one another. And, with seven tubes and a six inch speaker, it sounds great too, with tone control for your listening preference and a bright green “Magic Eye” tuning indicator. Add to that the unique roll tuning dial and volume controls and the adjustable preset tuning buttons, and you have a very high end radio for the times that still has charm and distinction. A highly collectible radio, it will enhance any location in your home or office. Unlike many of this model radio, this escutcheon is not warped or cracked; it is in excellent condition! As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was disassembled and cleaned. It retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated and nourished. The top and bottom trim were redone with brown mahogany toners. The entire cabinet was then given eight coats of clear lacquer. Finally, it was waxed with two coats of quality beeswax/orange oil polish to nurture and further bring out the beauty of the wood. The knobs, dial face and buttons are original. The dial is crisp and clear and is nicely back lit by two pilot bulbs. The grill cloth has been replaced, as was the power cord. There is no missing veneer nor damage to the finish other than one barely. Ding to the upper right trim of the speaker grill. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using a seven foot wire antenna (supplied). Just imagine the news stories, music and other entertainment this lovely radio has broadcast over the past 80 years. Now fully restored, it now has many more years of reliable quality sound and visual delight if well cared for. Dimensions: 16×14.5×9.5 It will be very well packaged to arrive safely to you! The “J” model is is not just a vintage radio, but an absolutely magnificent piece of art that displays the result of design and craftsmanship of the Art Deco period. Very rare to find in such wonderfully restored condition, it just radiates its striking beauty. From the rich and delicate burl wood to the very intricately detailed side veneers, it has a majestic presence that is a feast for the eyes and ears. The green “magic” tuning eye is bright and responsive to tuning of signals. Powered with eight tubes, it has great sensitivity and selectivity. It also has tone control for your listening preference and a sensitivity control on the rear of the chassis. As with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet retains the original stain, which was rejuvenated and nourished. The trim was redone with dark walnut toners to match the original appearance. The entire cabinet was then given nine coats of clear lacquer. Finally, it was waxed using a high quality orange oil/beeswax polished to further protect and enhance the beauty of the wood. The original wooden knobs are in excellent condition and were redone with the same process. The burl wood veneer has some minor separation/cracking (which is common) that can be seen in the photos. It was stabilized and sealed to decrease the risk of further issues. The glass dial face/cover is crystal clear and the multi colored graphics are crisp and nicely lit with two dial face bulbs. The grill cloth is original. The power cord is new, using the original plug. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the external seven foot antenna wire. At 82 years old and newly restored, this gorgeous and rare piece of treasured furniture will provide many more years of reliable pleasure if well cared for. This is a large and heavy radio at 31.5 lbs.
