Beautiful Vintage Hammarlund HXL-1 Tube-Type Amateur Radio Linear Amplifier

Beautiful classic Hammarlund HXL-1 linear amplifier in excellent working condition. This amplifier is from a local estate. You will see a small brass plaque on the front towards the bottom that says Leonard E. Len was a lifelong ham who owned and operated Walker Radio (now Walker Electronic Supply) in Albuquerque for many years. 20, 15, & 10 meters this grounded-grid amplifier uses two 572B tubes. This amplifier sat on a shelf collecting dust for many years — one of the pictures shows how dusty it was when I removed it from its cabinet. The amplifier contains an internal T-R relay and biases the 572B tubes completely off in standby so that there is no “shot” noise coming from conducting finals. First made in 1964, this is a very stable, very easy to use, very efficient amplifier. This amplifier makes full power with ease. It was removed from service many years ago when Len died. I brought it up very slowly over a week from zero to full 240 volts in order to preserve the good working condition of the electrolytic capacitors. I’m happy to say there were no surprises. A true boat-anchor, this amplifier weighs 66 pounds before packing material and a carton. The amplifier is currently wired for 240 volts. I’ll provide one if I have one in my collection. Otherwise it will come with the new power cord I attached to it (the old rubber one had rotted) and tinned conductors ready to accept your connector or to be hard wired into a safety switch or fuse block. This amp is a twin to one I’ve used for years — I really don’t need two of them!! A photocopy of the instruction manual will accompany this amplifier. This is a relist! Beautiful working hammarlund hx-50 dating from the 1960′s. This vintage hammarlund was the home station of w5nvt, a silent key. It sat for years on a shelf in his office in his store, then after his death has sat on a shelf in my hamshack for years. I cleaned it up a bit for this listing — 4 tubes were replaced as they had low transconductance. I cannot check the 6c10 compactron as my hickok tube tester is too old. The transmitter was brought up slowly on variac over several days — and tested on cw and ssb on the 40 meter band. Good output and good sounding audio and cw signal. Note: this is a really heavy “boatanchor, ” weighing 47 pounds before packing and carton weight are added. This transmitter is guaranteed not to be dead on arrival. A spiral-bound copy of the operating/service manual is included. The manual is either an original or is one of the best copies i’ve ever seen! Important: i recognize two modifications, both reversible. The 5r4 rectifier has been replaced with solid-state diodes and a suitable dropping resistor added to compensate for the plate resistance of the 5r4 so that the b+ won’t be too high, and an additional filament transformer has been added under the chassis. Also — a second oa2 vr tube has been added — in such a professional way that it appeared to be an original stock item. This was acquired by my sister and i from our late father’s estate. He was a loving father and ham for many years and unfortunately has passed away last year :0. This article was last kept in my dad’s possession. He lived and breathed amateur radio his entire adult life as a hobby and career and obtained the highest level certification and 45 years experience. The extent of testing was plugging the unit into the wall. The panel lights illuminated. My very best guess is that the unit is in working condition but no guarantees. I have received positive feedback concerning the sales of dad’s item over the past several months for peace of mind. Dad labeled the box it was stored in as “sx-76″… Assuming that may be the type tube that is installed? He had been looking at dad’s items that i had listed for sale and since has been reaching out with a helping hand remotely (thanks bob) since i know very little about amateur radio. He suggested that i turn the unit on in cw mode and adjust the sensitivity control to see if the s meter moved. The verdict is that the s meter does move slightly (from 80 to 60). The physical condition is as shown. Please be your own judge. There are visible scratches and light rust in areas. What you see in the photos is exactly what is for sale and exactly what you will receive. The unit weighs 32 lbs + 7.6 oz before packing material. If you have questions, please ask. It was found in a recent estate sale. The radio comes to you in nice cosmetic condition. The paint is pretty nice all around. There are a few scuffs here and there as you can see in the photos on the sides. The face is very clean and in great shape. Rca type 901769-501, 500 watt modulation transformer. The primary is center-tapped for push-pull modulators. The tranformer has two secondaries. Secondary #2 will carry 80 mils to modulate screens of beam power tubes or screen grid tubes. It is equipped with adjustable protective spark gaps on both primary and secondary. Primary will match any class b tubes up to 10,000 ohms plate-to-plate such as 810′s, 75t’s, 805′s, 8005′s, zb120′s, 203′s, hy51z’s, 211′s, 813′s, 828′s, 203z’s, etc. Maximum audio power: 550 watts. Secondary #1: 450 ma. Secondary #2: 80 ma. Pri to sec #1: 1:1. Pri to sec #2: 5:1. Pri to sec #2 tap 25:1. Pri to sec #2: 25:1. Pri to sec #2 tap: 625:1.
