And this one is no exception; The 1936 Aetna model 253 featuring an absolutely gorgeous cube designed American Walnut cabinet, waterfall top, spectacular volcano scene dial, top mounted speaker, original wood back and great performance. Cabinet: The American Walnut cabinet is simply stunning. It’s stylish cube design, coupled with the waterfall top, reminds you of the Streamline / Art Deco era. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set with an eye catching fiery grain on the sides. Black grooved inlays flow from the top of the cabinet all the way down the front. An intricate cut grill is located at the top of the cabinet to accommodate for the top mounted speaker which was advertised to produce a richer tone. It all comes together magnificently when powered up and the volcano scene dial comes to life with a bright glow and featuring an array of colors. What a spectacular sight! Especially in a dim lit room. Jet black trim and the original wood back finishes the cabinet off perfectly. This rare beauty is sure to be the highlight of any room in the home or office you choose to display it in. Dial: The reverse painted glass dial is a real head turner with one of the most unique designs you will find. It features an array of colors from red and gold to black and white. An erupting volcano scene is located in the center of the dial combining the Aetna brand name with the world famous Mt. The dial is illuminated by two dial lamps and lights nice and bright. All letters and number on the dial are legible and show virtually no signs of wear. The dial glass is clear and free from any chips, cracks or breaks. The surrounding brass escutcheon shines nicely and adds an elegant touch. Grill Cloth: The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classic gold color with a wave / swirl design. Chassis: All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. With the included copper line antenna the radio performs very well. The Cabinets Finish and Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine.
