Restored both electronically and cosmetically by a professional restorer. It has all of its original external components with the exception of the grille cloth which is a high quality period appropriate replacement, also the cord/plug was likely replaced at one time. It sounds excellent and pulls in stations very well both near and far using the attached external antenna. It has 2 SW bands and I was able to receive a few stations late at night including stations from Europe, and Radio Havana Cuba. This Zenith is stunningly beautiful, and this model is becoming less and less common, and 5S127s are very uncommon at this level of restoration the quality of the restoration is exceptional. The 5S127 is highly collectible and sought after for its. Famous large reflective black dial, for the Lightning Bolt “Z” pointer, the wooden Z etched knobs, the intricate wood latticed grill, and the carved art deco design cues. This Zenith 5S127 has been totally restored. The finish is virtually perfect the old finish was stripped off the cabinet to the bare wood and high quality stains were used to refinish the cabinet mixed to match as close to the original color and shine as possible. The original Z knobs are all present and in great functional condition. All tubes were checked and 2 weak ones were replaced, capacitors and resistors were replaced as needed, any components found to be out of tolerance or in poor shape were replaced. The speaker was in poor shape and replaced. The controls were cleaned and lubricated and the chassis was cleaned. The radio was also aligned to original factory specs and then it was thoroughly bench tested. This radio is ready for years of use. At 19 inches tall and 14 inches wide it has quite a presence and will be a statement piece in your home or office. Theres no doubt this radio broadcast such notable 1937 historical events as the horrific Hindenburg disaster, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and the growing winds of war overseas with Japans attack on China and non aggression pact with the Nazis! It was certainly the centerpiece and focal point of an American Familys home in the late 1930s and 1940s. The Dial light lights up highlighting the reflective details of the dial scale and it is breathtaking in a dark room. Zenith really knew how to make impressive dials back in the 1930s! The dial needle moves in sync with the tuning knob as designed and it is in good condition as is the dial scale. The knobs are on/off, tuning, band selection, and tone. The 5-S-127 was introduced in June of 1936 as part of Zenith’s line-up for 1937. All external components are original with the exception of the grille cloth and cord/plug. This Zenith Tombstone is a rare opportunity for a collector to have a true classic in their collection!
