Vintage 1920s Phenix Radio Corporation Ultradyne Model L-2 Radio Repair or Parts. Vintage 1920s Phenix Radio Corporation Ultradyne Model L-2 Radio For Repair or Parts. Ultradyne Model L-2 Radio for parts or repair. The radio was desiged by Robert E. Lacault and first came out in November 1924. This item is very clean inside and out considering the age. This is a vacume tube amplifier and features an engraved front panel measures 30 long by 7 high by 3/16 thick. All knobs seem to work and turn very smoothly. There is corrosion on several components and would need replacing. It features 8 vintage RCA vacume tubes (unshure if they work). The wiring is a MESS. The cabinet alone is well worth the listing price and it is wonderful with very little scratching. The cabinet measures 39 1/2″ long x 9 1/2″ deep x 9 tall. Also includes a Brach Power Control and has something inside causing a rattling noise when moved. It is also missing the power plug. This item DOES NOT WORK in it’s current condition. It was manufactured by Grebe Radio in Richmond Hill, New York in the early 1920′s. It is in spectacular condition with unusually clean original interior wiring and near mint original finish cabinet and front panel. No scratches, cracks, chips, warping, missing or added parts. Please see all the pictures of the actual radio for views. It is very unusual to find any Grebe receiver in this condition. This is one of the nicest CR-9 or CR-8 I have ever seen in 45 years as a collector, and I have seen dozens. I have never tried to make it work, but the circuit looks very clean, unmolested, and all original. For your consideration is this unusual radio mid-1920′s receiver from an obscure manufacture… The Stafford Radio Co.. It appears to be a crystal receiver with one stage of audio. Tuning is accomplished by sliding the two metal plates over the two flat wound coils. The tube is an RCA Radiotron UX199 and the filament has continuity. Very little information is available on this company other than it had manufactured a few crystal receivers and a few components. In one of their ads, a “Key to the Air” permanent cartridge detector is listed guarantying clear and loud signals, especially during the summer, … One is on this radio. The company also manufactured “Key to the Air” fixed mica foil capacitors and claimed they were very accurate and the design reduced noise which was associated with other designs. Stafford was a principle, and is credited with a patent for an Indoor Helix Cage Antenna. No other patent was found under his name or the company name. This radio the “Key to the Air” was also described as a Neuflex receiver in their ad. On local strong stations they suggested that the receiver could be used, as a straight crystal receiver, without the tube or batteries and that the earphone be plugged into the separate jacks provided. The claim was also made that on local stations using the full radio, a loud speaker would produce audible sound. Tuning the radio was accomplished by sliding the right and left metal plates over the flat coils. It’s possible that Stafford used this information in the design of their radio. Also in their ad, they describe the finish as a Duco Green Crackle, durable and beautiful. The coils are green silk insulated and the flat panel is black Pyradiolin. There is a small chip in the right rear corner missing from this panel. The panel is attached to the cast metal base with pins. Perhaps someone in the past tried to pry the radio apart and broke off the corner piece which broke around the pin and then gave up. If you like unusual radios or if this radio appeals to your curiosity then don’t pass this by. Or of you collect New England radio manufactures then you may not even been aware of this “Key to the Air” Neuflex receiver… You may never see one again. The approximately dimensions are 5 1/2″ wide , 5″ deep and 1 1/2 tall without the tube. If you look at the picture of the ad I took, it explains it better than I can. With that being said, the cabinet itself shows minor signs of age and wear: some very light surface scratches and dinks & dents (mainly around the edges). The lyre grill on the front and the decorative grill on the back are solid. The cone of the speaker has no holes, tears or rips that I can see without physically tearing this apart. The light spot you see in the picture of the front looks like a discoloration of the cone. It does not go through to the back side and it is not a hole. It isn’t as obvious in person. It is the flash of the camera that really makes it more pronounced. It also could be something that was dripped on it. The power cord shows minor wear to the outer cloth covering, has no bare wires showing and has both end tips present and securely attached. I tested this with a 9 volt battery and got the familiar clicking sound so the driver is good (works). 13″ wide, 4 1/2″ deep and 14 tall.
