This is a vintage Zenith portable tube radio, featuring the iconic Zenith styling, gold-accented dial, and the classic “The Royalty of Radio” emblem. The radio is housed in a textured black portable cabinet with carry handle and front latch-style door. Included with this radio is the original Zenith instruction manual, a scarce and highly desirable companion piece that significantly enhances collectability. This radio comes from a large private estate of a meticulous original owner with a long-term interest in radio equipment. Items from this estate were stored indoors, kept together with their accessories when possible, and preserved as part of a carefully maintained collection. The radio remains unrestored and unmodified, offered exactly as found. Untested (no power applied). Cabinet shows surface dust, dirt, scuffs, and age-related wear. Carry handle intact. Front door/lid present with latch. Dial glass intact with visible aging and haze. Both control knobs present. Internal components visible; no servicing attempted. Original instruction manual included. Manual shows heavy wear, creasing, and age, but remains intact and legible. This is a collector-grade project radio. This Ranger looks to be in fair cosmetic condition. The facepate is original and looks good. The cabinet has plenty of scuffs/scratches and has also been painted black. All controls feel good and turn smoothly. Inside, we can see that someone installed a solid-state rectifier device. Also, there are some modern capacitors under the chassis. Lastly, the power cord has been replaced with a new unit with fuses in-line. The sale includes a reproduction of the user manual. This is a nice amplifier. It has some scratches on the cabinet but looks good overall, particularly the faceplate with really looks great. Also included in the sale is a reproduction of the manual. With a line voltage of 230VAC, the plate voltage sat at 1850VDC in CW position. With 45 watts keyed-down on 40 meters we measured 500 watts out, which is about right as the manual calls for 1000W PEP and we can assume 50-60% efficiency. The tubes are getting extremely hot (orange in color) when we put the amp into high-voltage position. The L-4B was originally designed to only work with Drake equipment. This one has since been modified to work with other transceivers, and we used an IC-706MKIIG when testing rather than Drake equipment. Perhaps this won’t happen when using Drake gear? This old Heathkit is in pretty good cosmetic condition. The cabinet is in good shape with relatively minimal wear (one small dent on top, see photo), and the faceplate looks great. From what we can tell, it’s all original with no modifications. Two things to note. First, the band switch is very stiff and feels like it will need attention. Secondly, we had to cut the power cord off, as it was badly frayed and not safe to use as it was. All in all, this will make an excellent candidate for restoration! This unit is believed to have not been used in many years, likely decades, and with this in mind we have made no attempt to power-on this unit or test in any way.
