The finish on the radio is all original and has simply been cleaned and polished with a professional wood wax. The veneer on the bottom right and left sides are separating from the body, but this can easily be addressed with some glue. From a distance the defect is not noticeable. All of the knobs turn smoothly and properly and the dial indicator functions properly as well. The grill cloth is in excellent condition and the cloth power cord is also in exceptional condition. This Tempo transceiver is in fair cosmetic condition. The case is dirty and has some scuffs/scratches. Inside, even the chassis is a little dirty. All controls turn smoothly. Please note that the screws holding the chassis to the cabinet are not original. This one will make a great candidate for restoration or an excellent parts unit in the worse-case! His highly desirable Zenith does power on and it receives stations. The sound quality is good but it could definitely benefit from being electronically serviced. The automatic tuning appears to work but it is very finicky. The electronics are for the most part original except for the electrolytics and the power cord, they seem to have been replaced a long time ago. The chassis is nice and unmanaged. The cabinet’s cosmetics are good with no real damage to mention, just honest wear and patina. The cabinet is solid and there is no damage to the veneer. The finish does show some wear and blemishes, but it is nothing disappointing. The 12 unique glass rods are a fantastic design element that is not found on any other radio. Antique 1938/1939 Zenith 5R317 tube radio in excellent working and looking condition. Electrically restored and cabinet is refinished. Very clean example and is a model sought after by collectors. Plays well, receiving several stations with no hum or scratchy volume. Manual tuner works fine with an illuminated dial but didnt try the auto-tune. Escutcheon has a couple of scuffs on it. Wood cabinet is beautiful with apparently all original glass rods, push-buttons and knobs. Chassis & components look original including the speaker. This is the 5 tube version, looking identical to the 6D317 model. Missing is the back panel and repros are available if desired. This is how I acquired the set and have no information on its history, electrical parts replaced or who did the work. Ive photographed the underside so you can examine it yourself.
