The tube does not work, it is defective. Was tested by someone on a transmitter and did not work – possibly the fault transmitter? I do not have the original packaging or documents. Look carefully at all the pictures. I checked with the ohmmeter. Filament = short circuit. On the scale of 200 Megaohms. Filament + grid = infinite resistance. Filament + anode = infinite resistance. This is a very nice Heathkit SB-221 amplifier. As you know, the SB-221 covers 80-15 meters (no 10 meters, sorry) and features quality construction. This particular amp is in great condition. It does have a switch added to the front panel to toggle between “standby” and “operate”. I don’t know who did the modification and the reason for the octal sockets under the chassis, but it looks to be very well done. The switch matches the originals, and the workmanship in is evident. This was certainly no amateur hack-job. The amp also features a matched pair of Eimac 3-500Z tubes. On 40 meters (SSB) with 60 watts of drive, we measured over 1100 watts PEP. On CW keyed-down, we were getting 700+ watts out. The amp’s technical specs call for 2KW input on SSB and 1KW for CW, so this amp is running great! Please realize that this is a vintage piece of equipment, and unless specifically noted above, it has not been fully restored with new components. It will inevitably need maintenance, however it’s impossible to know whether that will be next week or a few years down the road. Unless you are capable of doing this work yourself (or have access to someone who can), we suggest you revisit the idea of whether this is the right equipment for you.
