Zenith tube radio 5-S-228. Mostly restored, however did it used some kind of stain that is more like paint? Veneer is in excellent condition. Burlap grill cloth has been replaced. Original glass dial is in very nice condition, including the brass bezel original knobs. Radio appears to be complete. Looks like a Bluetooth plug was added. Radio turns on, dial lights up but I could not tune in any stations. I think an antenna is required? Original knobs, all work and dial turns smoothly as it should. Not sure if this is the original cord. Please see photos for condition.

This is a nice vintage Zenith model 5-S-228. It is complete with original wood cabinet, wood knobs, and chassis! The top has been cut off and reattached at some point and its not the prettiest job; great for the handyman or woodworker to repair. This radio was manufactured by Zenith in 1938 and features an Art-Deco Design. The radio offered for sale in this listing is in good overall condition for its age. It appears to be mostly orignial. Cosmetically the radio does show signs of wear, with some scratches as shown. Some of the veneer is seperating at the bottom as shown. One of the knobs (Right knob in the photos) appears to be a replacement. There is some cracking in the dial face around the area of the lights due to heat from the bulbs. It appears that a previous owner replaced the filter capacicitors, but otherwise all the original zenith caps and resistors are in tact. With a bit of TLC, this radio could be museum quality, making it a great restoration project. Please view all photos and the video carefully before purchasing. The big black dial is one of the more popular styles of Zeniths out there and this one is sure to not disappoint! The following things were done to this radio. All capacitors were replaced with modern day equivalents. All tubes checked and replaced if found weak or bad. A lot of attention to detail was taken with the electronic restoration of this radio and is especially shown by the careful repacking of the electrolytic cans with modern day capacitors. The radio plays strong and clear, it is picking up 10 stations on short wave and about 8 stations on A. In my area and thats without an antenna!!! All of the knobs and switches turn easily as they should. The wood case is in excellent condition with the exception of a small crack on the top rounded area and a bump on the left side (see pic). What I believe to be the original grill cloth is present and in excellent condition as well. Over all this radio would make a wonderful addition to any collection for listening, display, or both!!
