The beautiful wood grains are a main feature of this Ingraham designed Firestone Air Chief radio. A smaller radio, it is called “The Melody”. In addition to the fabulous veneers, it has a horizontal inlay along the lower part that further adds to its allure. The smooth curves give it a warm and inviting look. It does have a few flaws as can be seen in the photos, and is missing three of the vertical grill bars. Those only minimally detract from the overall charm and presence of this stunning radio. The gold tone and ivory dial face mates wonderfully with the cabinet. It sounds great too, with the rich and mellow tube sound through a five inch speaker. With five tubes, it has very good sensitivity, selectivity and reception using the internal loop antenna. There is a wire to allow the attachment of a longer wire antenna if needed for your location. Of course, as with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was stripped of the old varnish and lacquer, keeping the original stain. It was then nourished and rejuvenated. The entire cabinet was then given seven coats of clear lacquer with excellent results. The Firestone decal was replaced. The dial face is in excellent condition with crisp and clear graphics that are nicely lighted. The dial cover is a new replacement. The original knobs were polished. The grill cloth was replaced, as was the power cord. Felt pads were added to the bottom to protect your furniture. The photos tell the rest of the story about the very good overall condition of the cabinet and how well the restoration turned out. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. Wiring and other components were replaced as needed. The original speaker is in excellent condition and sounds great. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the internal loop antenna. This highly collectible and rare radio demands a place of distinction and will compliment any decor. Just imagine all of the news of the world, music and stories it has broadcast over the past 81 years! Now newly restored inside and out, it will continue to provide many more years of reliable enjoyment if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off.
