The previous owner had bought it as a spare parts unit, however he didn’t indicate whether it was currently operational or not. As you can see, there are currently no tubes, parasitic suppressors, or plug installed. This is exactly the way we found it. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it has newer Harbach mods installed, including the power supply board and cooling fan. Also, the bottom of the cabinet is dented up. Other than that, it’s in relatively good cosmetic condition. This item will be packaged using our InstaPak foam-in-bag system, ensuring the utmost protection! Bags filled with a chemical mixture expand around your item and harden to form a protective, yet forgiving, foam barrier. IMPORTANT: You will only receive what is photographed. If it is not shown in the photos, it is not included in the sale. This includes items such as original packaging, accessories, manuals, and so on. Speaking of manuals, it is strongly recommended that you thoroughly read it before attempting to operate the equipment. If a manual is not included in this sale, you should download one. This is a very nice Heathkit SB-221 amplifier. As you know, the SB-221 covers 80-15 meters (no 10 meters, sorry) and features quality construction. This particular amp is in great condition. It does have a switch added to the front panel to toggle between “standby” and “operate”. I don’t know who did the modification and the reason for the octal sockets under the chassis, but it looks to be very well done. The switch matches the originals, and the workmanship in is evident. This was certainly no amateur hack-job. The amp also features a matched pair of Eimac 3-500Z tubes. On 40 meters (SSB) with 60 watts of drive, we measured over 1100 watts PEP. On CW keyed-down, we were getting 700+ watts out. The amp’s technical specs call for 2KW input on SSB and 1KW for CW, so this amp is running great! Please realize that this is a vintage piece of equipment, and unless specifically noted above, it has not been fully restored with new components. It will inevitably need maintenance, however it’s impossible to know whether that will be next week or a few years down the road. Unless you are capable of doing this work yourself (or have access to someone who can), we suggest you revisit the idea of whether this is the right equipment for you. This transceiver looks pretty good. The biggest cosmetic issue is that the previous owner painted the cabinet with a shade of green that differs from the original “Heathkit green”, and there are some flakes in the paint as Heathkit didn’t use a primer. Inside, it looks all original. You’ll notice the rubber bands are broken, but that’s extremely common. This equipment is part of a very large silent-ley estate we recently acquired, all of which has been in a storage unit for approximately 15 years. We have not done any testing beyond what is specifically mentioned above. There are a few reasons for this, but it essentially comes down to the fact that they almost always need some level of service and it’s simply not cost effective to pay our technician to spend time going through them. It may or may not need components replaced (caps, resistors, tubes, etc), controls cleaned/lubricated, alignment, and so on. Unless you are qualified and capable of working on this unit yourself, or are willing to pay a qualified individual to do the work for you, we suggest you revisit the idea of whether this is the right equipment for you. This is a very good looking piece of Heathkit equipment. It’s all original in regards to cosmetic and electronics. We didn’t take it out of the cabinet so we can’t take off the RF cage’s cover, but the tubes are there. We noticed that the meter switch (grid, power, high voltage, current) is frozen in place. This can likely be freed up with electrical contact cleaner. Also, the shaft of the grid control is loose and will almost come out of the chassis (see the last photo). Because of these issues, we haven’t powered the amp on at all. Overall, this will make an excellent candidate for restoration! This amp looks really good. The cabinet has been repainted and is a bit off the original “Heathkit green” but still looks terrific. The front panel is in great shape. Inside, everything looks original and unmodified. All controls feel good except for the band switch, which is a little tight but still works. My guess is that this can be remedied with electrical contact cleaner. We’ve briefly powered the amp to ensure it turns on and the tube filaments lit up, which they do. We’ve done no further testing in the amp. Please note that no tubes are included. The tubes shown in the photos are only there to show filaments lighting up. They have since been removed for use in another project. This equipment is part of a very large silent-ley estate we recently acquired, all of which has been in a storage unit for approximately 15 years. This receiver is in fair cosmetic condition. The cabinet is dirty and has some chipped paint (common as Heathkit didn’t use primer), the faceplate is a little dirty, and it’s missing the two front feet. Inside, it contains three filters and appears complete with no signs of modification. This’ll make a great restoration candidate! This equipment came from the estate of a serious ham operator and audiophile, and has been tucked away in a storage unit for approximately 15 years. We’ve made the decision to sell this older equipment 100% as-is and untested. This transceiver is dusty/dirty, as you can probably see in the photos. It’s missing a knob, but looks complete otherwise. All controls appear to be turning relatively smoothly. It has the 404-284-1 and 4042-83 filters installed. Also, the rubber pulley-strings have dried up, as is common when these have sat as long as this one has. This’ll make a great restoration piece or parts unit! This receiver is in relatively good cosmetic condition. The only real problem is that the cabinet has been repainted, and the color does not match the original color very well. Other than that, it looks complete and unmodified. It has the original serial number tag, along with another that says “SB-310-3″. I’m guessing that’s an option, but I’m not sure what it is. It has two filters installed, the 404 M 314 P 504 and the N-404-200. All controls feel smooth. This’ll make an excellent candidate for restoration! This amp is in pretty good cosmetic condition. There are some scratches on the cabinet, but the faceplate looks great. It’s very clean inside, as you can hopefully see in the photos. Now, for the bad news. It was working fine and was putting out full power, or as close as we can with an amp that’s wired for 120VAC. It wasn’t until we brought it over to the photo booth that the I noticed the band switch felt a little funny. After playing with it for a few seconds, it completely gave out. I opened the amp up and found that the switch had completely broken in half (see photos). It’s a good amp, but obviously it cannot be used until the band switch has been replaced. This is a good looking receiver. The cabinet shows a little wear, but the faceplate looks great. We didn’t take off the bottom cover, but from what we can tell it’s original and unmodified. It was tucked away in storage when we found it, so we have no idea when it was last used. As you can see, we did remove the crystal calibrator. This unit is believed to have not been used in many years, possibly decades, and with this in mind we have made no attempt to power-on this unit or test in any way. Unless you are qualified and capable of working on this unit yourself, or are willing to pay a qualified individual to do the work for you, we suggest you revisit the idea of whether this is the right equipment for you.
