This beautiful mantle radio is a real treat for the eyes! With the cabinet made of solid wood, the design, craftsmanship and construction quality are superb. It has inlays of oak and walnut and is in excellent condition, especially given its age. My research has found that Air-Castle radios were made by a number of companies, and this one has a Clarion/TCA (Transformer Corporation of America) chassis. It was a “curtain burner” radio that had a resistor built into the power cord and it got quite warm, hence the name. That has been modernized to use a capacitor in place of the resistor wire and a new, cloth covered power cord that looks like the original, but has safe, modern wire inside. There is nary a flaw in the cabinet and the photos tell the rest of the story about how how well the restoration turned out. It not only looks charming, it sounds good too. With five tubes, it has good sensitivity, selectivity and reception. Using the provided external antenna wire. And of course a. S with all of the radios I restore, it has been gone over with the utmost attention to detail. The cabinet was stripped of the old varnish and lacquer, keeping the original stain. It was then nourished, rejuvenated and balanced. The bottom trim was redone with dark walnut toner. The entire cabinet was then given seven coats of clear lacquer with excellent results. The brass escutcheons retain some of the original patina and are in excellent condition. He knobs are original and have been polished. One knob has a small chip. The grill cloth has been replaced with a beautiful design that is a close representative of the original. The power cord was replaced with a cloth covered one, using the original plug. The bottom felt pads are original and in good condition. Electronically, the chassis was restored, cleaned and serviced, with all paper/wax and electrolytic capacitors replaced with new ones. Tubes and resistors were tested and replaced as needed. All controls and contacts were detail cleaned and lubricated. The curtain burner power cord was replaced with a modern capacitor and new wiring. Other wiring and components were replaced as needed. The radio was aligned, peaked and tuned for optimal reception and quality of sound using the 12 foot external antenna (provided). This is a very rare radio with a stunningly pleasant presence and it. Demands a place of distinction. It is a must for the collector or those with discerning taste. Just imagine all of the news of the world, music and stories this wonderful radio has broadcast. 4 years old and newly restored inside and out, it will continue to provide many more years of reliable enjoyment if well cared for. Note: Tube radios consist of a variety of vacuum tubes, capacitors, resistors and other electronic components. This radio has been disassembled, cleaned, and components tested. All non-functioning or suspect components were replaced. Vacuum tubes are similar to light bulbs in that an interior filament heats up inside the vacuum tube. When the filament burns out, the tube will need to be replaced. The tubes in this radio are in good. The longevity of the tube and its filaments is related to the length of time the radio is operated and the frequency of turning the radio power on and off.
