The “Spanish Brown” Philco model 511 table radio was introduced in the summer of 1928. The 511 was one of a group of models heralding Philco’s entry into the radio manufacturing arena. Until this time, the company’s primary products had been batteries and battery eliminators, but with the advent of AC powered radios, sales were declining and the products faced imminent obsolescence. In an effort to survive therefore, Philco diversifed their operation into producing radios for the home. AK and Crosley had started the move to metal cabinets in 1927 and Philco chose to use them as well for their first radios. The model 511 is housed in a large metal case with a removable lid. It uses unique Philco knobs which are all present and original. Nice brass dial plate too. The brown painted cabinet has numerous small scratches and other wear but presents well as is. Some of the marks on the front panel will likely clean off to improve its appearance. The interior of the cabinet and chassis are clean.. All tubes are included and the tuning capacitor turns smoothly using the front dial. I tested the tubes for continuity only and they all passed. The radio does not have a power cord and has not been powered on since I owned it. Please see pictures of this sought after radio for greater details.
