For your consideration is this very desirable 1936 Philco Shoulder Tombstone Radio Model 610. It is a five tube a. Superhet covering the broadcast band, 530 to 1720 Khz, and two short wave bands 2.3 to 2.5 Mhz and 5.7 to 18.0 Mhz. The 2.3 to 2.5 Mhz band covered, at that time, the local police frequency. The radio works very well. Audio is loud without any distortion. The finish on the walnut wood cabinet appears to be the factory original. The veneer is tight all around but has two parallel scratches on the right side about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long (see the second photo). The radio has it’s original speaker grill cloth which was carefully cleaned. There are no holes. The speaker cone had deteriorated and was recently re-coned. The oval ornate metal and glass dial escutcheon was cleaned and all the glass reverse printing remains. The large station celluloid dial is a reproduction from Radio Daze. It is a bit redder and thicker than the original, however all the text and graphics are perfect. The knobs are the original for this model and in perfect condition. The dial shuttle mechanism works allowing the light from the dial lamp to point to each selected band. When you turn the knob below the tuning knob the receiving band is selected and the light will point to it. All three old filter tubular capacitors remain but are replaced with new electrolytics. All seven bakelite tubs were emptied and re-stuffed with new components. All resistors were tested and many that were out of tolerance were replaced. Any frayed or dried wires were replaced with period looking clothed covered wire. The three twisted wires going to the speaker were replaced with new cloth covered wire. A new #47 dial lamp was also installed. And, all moving parts were lubricated and all switches and controls chemically cleaned. The bell of the fine tuning vernier was disassembled, cleaned and re-lubricated. The old power cord was replaced with a new cloth cover cord terminating with a period plug. All tubes were tested on a TV-7 and all test good. The radio was powered and aligned accurately to an IF of 460Khz and then followup adjustments according to Philco’s instructions were made on all bands bands. When finished, using an antenna strung up in the shop, the radio received plenty of a. On the old police band, only noise was heard, but on the second short wave band tons of world-wide stations were received. To get all the reception from this receiver.. The way it was designed back in 1936, a long outside antenna 100′ or more is a must. However, many shortwave stations were heard with just the hank of 25′ wire strung up in my shop. The antenna wire is included so that you can get this Philco up and running right away. If you collect Philco’s or would just like an gorgeous looking Shoulder Tombstone radio to accent your decor then don’t pass this one by. You wont find one this nice.
