We offer Quality Antique Radios. To view our other antique radio auctions, as well as antique radio grill cloth. Here we have a rarely seen 1935 Crosley model 655 tombstone radio. Nicknamed the Olympia, this was one of Crosley’s top of the line table radios for that year. The dark walnut cabinet is quite the attention getter. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set featuring an elegant burl grain on the front and fiery grain on the sides. The shouldered tombstone design is quite attractive with its rounded top corners and eye catching pillared sides. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. The jet black trim adds the perfect contrast and shiny brass escutcheons finish the cabinet off with class and style. This rare beauty is sure to be the main topic of conversation no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. The backlit dial is illuminated by two dial lamps. It lights nice and bright with a warm orange glow. The three band scales are represented by three different colors. Right below the dial are the same three color dots corresponding to what band you are currently listening to. The center dial art work features an arching radio tower with world globes on each side, the sun on the right, and the moon with stars on the left. What a spectacular sight! Take note to the WLW on the dial. This was Crosley’s original station call letters! All letters and numbers on the dial are legible and show very little signs of wear. The surrounding brass escutcheon, as well as the one surrounding the three colored dots, shine nicely and add to the elegance of the set. All four knobs are in perfect shape and control the following; vernier tuning (for pinpoint accuracy), on/off & volume, band switch, and high/low tone control. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a. Color with a geometric design. All tubes in the 6 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. 12W x 16 1/4H x 9D.
